Yrael was the eighth of the Nine Bright Shiners that existed at the creation of the world in those books. The first seven of them created the charter (the bells are named after them), but the sixth and seventh held something back so that they retained corporeal forms. Orannis, the ninth, was opposed to the seven, and attempted to destroy them. Yrael did not want to pick sides, but he was bound as a servant to the Abhorsen in the form of either an albino dwarf, or a white cat called Mogget (he could change forms, but spent most of his time as the cat) because he stood idly by while the world was almost destroyed. His true, unbound form is a vaguely humanoid shape of blinding white energy.
