one possible problem with instruments is with current prices bards are looking at spending upto 10k gold every 120 months or so.

Though there may be a bard skill that could fix that problem which I wouldn't know about.

Might be time to idea a repair skill for artisans.

My warrior alt spent 40,000 gold for the CHEAPEST pair of hammers he could find. On top of that, he paid 20,000 gold for the CHEAPEST field plate he could find. Remember, bards don't have to buy expensive armor - no 15,000 gold greatrobes, no 20,000 gold plate mail. Just leather. I don't see this cost as any more than other guilds pay, in fact, it almost seems to be much less.

QUOTE(roark @ Oct 9 2006, 06:52 PM) 340933
I believe Estarra and I are totally ignorant of how bards work in those two games. I wanted to stay completely ignorant so as to not allow any of my thinking be directed by preconceived notions of how bards work. So my guess is there is nothing in common. If there is then it is purely coincidence.
QUOTE(Fallen @ Oct 9 2006, 06:53 PM) 340934
Only acrobatics has any similarities. Nothing else is even remotely close.

Glad to hear both points smile.gif

Nobody is going to wear leather.

Nobody, ever.

And I don't want to see bards in robes. I want different great robe patterns, dammit.

Question about some of the changes this might bring.

1) Will bards have any effect on the culture mechanic? I could see them having the potential to affect the culture score, not just libraries. Maybe by doing performances--plays or sonnets. Or by publishing special songbooks in the library system.

2) Will bards enhance or have enhancement to influencing. I could see bardic music being important to influencing attempts.

3) Will non-bards be able to play instruments? Perhaps with a high-level ability in the arts or dramatics skill? At least give Richter hope of playing his violin!

4) Can we have a sing emote, with line breaks possible? I really want to see that, and it makes great sense for bards to do that. As a related topic, can bards sing their created songs without invoking any of the effects?
Unknown2006-10-09 23:11:12
Actually, bards can wear Greatrobes.. which helps since dodging doesn't work against denizens.
Verithrax2006-10-09 23:13:33
I suppose you could sing them without targetting anyone and without enemies in the room - Then it would just buff you and allies.

And I want a flute. I can totally alternate between singing and playing.
Unknown2006-10-09 23:17:36
Maybe for culture this could be done.

* Cities and communes can buy theaters or performing arts centers.

* Once a year a live performance must be conducted. Those performances are judged similar to stories. Since we don't want the admin there forever, we have community contests to weed out the top 5 or 3 people. Additionally, the theaters can have room controls to shut up the audience or hide emotes.

* A small quest can have certain extra denziens in villages or on roads who want to be lead to a major city to attend the theater, similar to the scholar quests. Either that, or bards might have to come to those denziens and play in front of them!

which would completely nullify the need for instruments to be an artisan skill. The other thing is that warriors can actually recover the commodities for their weapons then remake them when they get close to decaying(right?)

We only get back metal comms, anything else is burnt away by the forge, and I am sure no bard instrument will cost 200 steel to make. sad.gif

As for the song/effects thing, you don't have to imbue a power into a stanza to be able to sing the stanza.

Anarias heartily argues leather over greatrobes almost every time the subject is broached tongue.gif There's some crazy fanatics that prefer leather blink.gif

He's elfen though, so that's no surprise really.
Unknown2006-10-09 23:25:17
The only problem with the instrument decaying is that it loses all proficiency. So every four months or so, a player has to spend time getting the intrument back to 100%. Don't know just how large an effect proficiency has on an instrument or how long it takes to get to 100% though, so that may not be that big a deal.

I'll be deeply disappointed if Necroscream won't have a buff that will cause the bard and/or allies to headbang, which would work like passive headslam on enemies.

that would be AWESOME! and then make another skill in the same vein to turn the group into one big moshpit (stun, damage, etc)

QUOTE(Ekard @ Oct 9 2006, 12:33 PM) 340841

Welcome in warriors world.

They have to spend a lot more then that!

Most notably in time spent making good weapons >.<

From what I've heard, don't you have to attune an instrument to yourself before it works well? It would suck to have to keep redoing that.

It takes ages. I've been using my lute almost non-stop for 2 days, and it's up to 23% aptitude.
Sylphas2006-10-10 02:40:24
Anyone mentioning Warrior costs is also assuming we should balance with that. I'd say we should actually make their costs lower, but I can't think of a way to do it without totally killing forging. It's a steep barrier to require so much gold of new players to make use of their skills.

Everyone's talking about Bards in terms of combat potential and bashing. What about the art, the music, the culture!?? >.>
