People have told me many times that thornlash is overpowered. I have, however, found it very ineffective when using it myself (even when rabbiting it), or at least seemingly so. I have also, however, never been on the recieving end of a thornlash rabbit. I am going to try to post a few lots from the last few times I used it from my end - the people involved can say what happened on their end if they wish.

This log is from one of the FFAs - we were in an unmelded forest right between our demesnes (I got sick of fighting over the meld, and can't sap usefully outside of a meld).

At this point, he was fully healed with plenty of mana and no thornlashes on him. Darkseed had wore off, so he could move again - instead, his curing just stopped. I'm not sure if he lagged out or if I hit a bug in his system, or if he ran out of willpower, but he just stoped writhing and clotting alltogether and he died from bleeding. This is without an ignite enchantment on his part, but without a demesne on mine. He didn't do a thing against me during all this, which was strange, since he had plenty of time to act while writhing, but I don't think he ever got free of the darkseed hits, despite them ending halfway through that (he could have used summer to get out without spending writhe balance, not slowing down his curing of the vines at all).

I will point out that similar rabbitting did nothing against Ceren when I gave up trying to saplock him. However, again, I won because his thornlash curing just.... stopped at one point. I don't know what is breaking people's systems, but don't they both use Thorgal's? Might be a bug there.

For the record, I have a level 1 eq bonus.

L1 eq is the reason. Change to mugwump and re-assess. You'll find it's incredibly simple to demolish with it.

After the eq nerf, is the difference really that much? I'm not about to racechange for overpoweredness, but if mugwumps are really that much more effective that they can turn something that's too slow to be useful into something that's impossible to deal with, that's a problem with mugwumps, not with thornlash

It sucks on its own. It's with a demesne that it's stupidly overpowered.

Upon testing, I found that thornlash is a standard 4 second balance like I thought it was. Is that really too fast?

A few quick tests:

Thornlash:

61.699-58.464 (3.235) = writhe time
62.530-58.464 (4.066) = lash time (no lightning)

19.394-17.181 (2.213) = writhe time
20.946-17.181 (3.765) = lash time (with level 1 bonus)

Point cudgel:

54.345-50.239 (4.106) = cudgel time (with no lightning)
32.693-28.928 (3.765) = cudgel time (with level 1 bonus)


It's the same exact speed as point cudgel, and all other standard actions.

Right, the thornlashing you in my demesne wasn't doing a thing to you, I thought. Can you post a log that supports your claim that it's overpowered in a demesne? I'm not saying you're wrong so much as that in my experience, it only works well against someone the first time, and then they figure out how to deal with it. If I'm wrong, I'd like to see a log showing why.

I don't have a log, but talk to Athana, she uses it to great effect (at least, I think it was her...)

Posting any one writhe time means little, as writhing is not a set time. There is a bit of fluctuation on it actually. Eq doesn't effect writhe time too, so you might want to check out your timestamping/system lag/whatever.

I don't have too much problem with thornlash if it's being used with the instant kill in mind. However, my problem with it is the arm balance recovery, which we've already talked about.


Oh, and blacktalons can use it to great effect to evoke bleeds, which absolutely destroy mana reserves. Makes the swoop instakill actually feasible, but I think that is a good thing.

I can sit on top of trees with treelife, treebane, and swoop, and only rarely make offensive progress. And, honestly, I like it like that. It has enough other options involved with it. If you think that simple end-to-end thornlashing is overpowered, though, it's time for a reassessment of things.

I didn't have too many problems in Cis and my only spar like three or so days ago. I just ignited whenever I saw him lash, and even as a Mugwump, it didn't do too much. Highest bleeding he got me was a bit above 1k, but that wasn't that hard to cure. Key is to move constantly and try to avoid the demesne.

Eh, that was the writhe time of my target. Not actually relevent, but I was showing it was significantly less than my recovery time, and he wasn't disabled while writhing either.

True, but EQ affects the rate at which he can cast another thornlash at someone. If lvl3 is, perhaps 1 second faster then lvl 1, then that's a lot of seconds you're gaining slowly in a fight, it could be the difference between winning and losing while employing that method.

I honestly don't find Thornlash overpowered, and I've foughten Athana, in her demesne, with her using mainly that to try to kill me. It's WAY to easy to just...ohh, ignite and look, all the vines are gone.

What's the downside to ignite? Just a 4 second eq? I'm wondering why people who think writhing is too much bleeding are so adverse to using ignite to cure vines...

Because 4s of offense is HUGE in a combat situation. 4s is the difference between having an incredible offense, and being laughed at.

Imagine having an extra 4s to cure my damage.
Imagine having an extra 4s to get out of Geb's pits
Imagine having an extra 4s when Dia chokes.
Imagine having 4s fighting any celestine to get out of judge.

Can't ignite when paralysed. 1s every demesne tick (minimum) to focus body. When you ignite a mugwump can lash you TWICE before someone with L0 eq can regain. I rest my case.

Edit: If the limb balance is removed, I think the skill isn't -too- strong, but in the hands of a mugwump it most certainly darn spankin' right is.
