I wouldn't buy credits if there was a chance of me dying.
Even if credits transfered to new charachters? I wouldn't, that would make me more likely to buy credits.
Quite a few of the South Korean games allow you to buy "credits" for your account, and then divvy that stuff up between your ingame charachters as much as you want.
I always liked that model because this way, guild hopping was for IC reasons, not OOC reasons.
Gwylifar2006-11-02 21:38:39
You'd probably have more instances of people getting bored with a character, or finding the character in an untenable and unsupportable position, then dying on purpose in order to get all the credits back to start over.
Hmmm, now that I think of it... I'd like this for that very reason.
Of course, you'd probably not get those credits back 100% after a death, so that would help curtail that.

The biggest problem with perma-death is that it allows for some permanent success of people who are willing to pay (which, let's face it, is not a huge percentage of the Lusternian player base), but those who work hard to develop themselves IC-ly lose everything.
It's different than reading a book - reading a book takes a little bit of time, but it's not an investment of any sort. I don't know of many people who would pay as much money for books as they pay for IRE games. I've played my character for well over an OOC year, I would hate any game where that could be taken away by anyone who had purchased credits, started a new character two weeks ago, and came to kill me.
The basic effect would be the end of conflict, since nobody likes the monotony of having to regain levels over and over, re-learn lessons, and re-earn the status they have already gained in their city/commune/guild/etc.. If we all liked that, we'd simply create hundreds of alts constantly.
IRE games allow you to transfer credits that are purchased or gained OOC between your characters, you just can't transfer credits bought or won IC.

Umm, perma-death would stop raiding. Permanently.
Sylphas2006-11-02 22:50:15
Dying wouldn't return 100% of credit purchases. If it did, people could kill off their character and guildhop with no penalty. So if we assume this to be true, perma-death would be a terrible mechanic, even with credits transferring. Anyone you killed would be losing credits, killing any real combat or conflict.
Daganev2006-11-02 22:55:51
The way it would ideally work is like this.
You have one charachter per account. At death, all lessons that you have learned, go into your account, all artifacts you have on your posession get traded in, and credits go to your account.
Then you start over.
But now that I'm thinking, i see a problem with credit transfers and the like... which is why we don't have permadeath

My problem would still be that you lose all of your other investments, other than RL money. If you spend a lot of time developing your character, and raising IC money for credits and the like, then you're killed, you're screwed. Ekard, for example, would be thrown back to being a completely newbie if he died.
Yes that is the point, right now you have tons of people who do not respect the consequences of their actions. If you died, you would learn to appreciate the RP side of the game.
QUOTE(Zarquan @ Nov 2 2006, 03:02 PM) 349726
You should really stop bringing up the whole perma-death idea. It's never, ever going to happen and suggesting is ludicrous. Try thinking about it from a business perspective and realize that this isn't some niche game with 6 people playing. There is no mechanic that's going to allow perma-death and keep people interested in playing this game, so drop it, please.
Heh, sounds to me like you are scared of death IG as you must be scaed of death OOC. It is a natural process and like I said, it will never happen here... But if it did, you would like most others have to learn the simple concept of actions having consequences.

Why not? You of course could live a very long time, especially if you made sure you took responsibility for your actions IG.

If it were set to perma death on PK kills only, not from bashing would be sufficient. Again this was a what if thing. But conflict would not end, trust me. It would be well thought out though.. and people who try and grief others will become non existant to a point. Imagine for instance you have a "griefer" killing low level people..... well you take an attack party, from lets say serenwilde, stalk and kill him... and he will be out of your lives for quite some time. That and maybe he would rethink his methods the next time he makes a character and plays him... No one wants to die permanantly... that is the whole point.
Raiding will come with an extreme cost....
Another idea would be to make it so that it is a 3 strikes you are out thing. 3 PK's and you have to "reincarnate" then... back to level 1 or back 20 levels or something. This will cause your hp/mana/ego to suffer.
This would in turn curb everyone crying about how PK conflict isnt fair. It would also as I stated make people think about what they are about to do.

Amazing that a "pacifist" that hardly leaves the pool worries about raiding.
I for one would suffer under this too, I am not Felandi (and no offense Felandi, I just meant I am not a pacifist player... you are awesome ). I go out and put my ass on the line all the time. I also would have to pick my battles.
You could also make this a prime based thing only also. Make death mean something. But then again you will have certain people taking advantage of this like they did when they could have their "followers" strip lich and vitae.
As it stands right now alot of things would have to change to implement it... everyone would either get rez skills like celest has that can bypass praying or rezz skills do not exist. When you die you auto pray on prime boom... dead... if it was a PK that killed you... then strike 1. Each murderer then could be listed in a bounty (hehe... the more people that person PK's the higher the bounty which would be delivered to the person killing them, by the avenger (direct deposit so to speak)
Anyways, it was just a what if... but I do find it funny how so many are opposed to taking responsibility for thier actions.
That and if you want new people to climb the ranks of the city... well with a stagnant "death means nothing" outlook, that will really never happen.

I truly resent that. I'm almost never at the Pool of Stars, for your information. And group combat (aka raiding) is the only combat I enjoy in Lusternia. Just because I don't "go out and put my ass on the line all the time", doesn't mean I can't suffer from lack of raiding.

If he hasn't read it by now, its amazing it hasn't been spoiled yet. Don't feel guilty, if he really didn't want it spoiled, he would have shut himself in his room and read it the day it came out like the rest of us did.
