The american measurement system is much more original; easily multipliable units of measure are for wimps who can't handle math although I will admit in size one font that the metric system does make a hell of a lot more sense.

Kilometer-per-hour might sound wierd, but km-per-hour sounds perfectly fine to me.
And psh. Why is a feet called a feet, if it isn't the length of a feet?

My foot is about one foot long...
Shiri2007-03-08 14:39:31
Yeah...a foot is about a foot long. Maybe not if you're a short/small Chinese guy though. (Just guessing based on your country, sorry if I'm wrong!)
Callia2007-03-08 15:30:47
You know, there are short non-Chinese people too! And besides, the Japanese are shorter :-p
Unknown2007-03-08 16:09:57
Hrm, you may be right about the part about smaller feet. I have 20 cm long feet. And my converter tells me that one feet is roughly 30 cm. Although I do have smaller than average feet, it's usually just one to two size smaller than other guys my age. (Found this out while bowling. )
All the more metric system should be used! The Imperial system discriminates against people with small feet by making it utterly confusing for people without feet-sized feet.

Except that with the imperial system, it is very easy to measure your room without a measuring tape, and to in general, know the sizes and amounts of things without actually measuring.
Thumb = inch
Foot = foot
Glass of water = 8oz
nose to fingertip = yard
1 mile = 15 minutes of walking.
And while driving, its easy to convert how many minutes it will take to get somewhere based on the distance since going 60mph, 1 mile = 1 minute, and since time is based on the whole 6 system anyways, you need to know how to do that math easily too.
But of course, education is much cheaper than the price of changing standards, so lets just all get educated.
Also, while it may be easier to mutiply/divide by 10 in your head, when you are in the kitchen, it is much easier to half/double the size of things when you look at them, than it is to figure out what 1/10th of it is.
Thats probabbly why england still uses it for cooking.

didn't some king somewhere just measure his foot and said that's how long a foot was? I'm probably wrong on this.

Pish, you're all wrong. British schools teach their kids Magic and they have no need for our Muggle measurements!

Thumb = inch
(My thumb is 2 cm, compared to 2.5 cm for an inch)
Foot = foot
(Like I've said before, mine is 20 cm versus 30 cm for 1 foot)
Glass of water = 8oz
(I have many differently sized cups. Which do I use?)
nose to fingertip = yard
(Very very likely that I have arms shorter than what makes up a yard)
1 mile = 15 minutes of walking.
(So when I speedwalk for 15 minutes compared to when I slow-march for 15 minutes, it'll be 1 mile?)
And while driving, its easy to convert how many minutes it will take to get somewhere based on the distance since going 60mph, 1 mile = 1 minute, and since time is based on the whole 6 system anyways, you need to know how to do that math easily too.
(Going 90+km/hr in my country is illegal except on highways.)

(Not sure which ones are double/half, seeing that cup <-> quart/gallon is quadriple/four times, pound <-> ounce is 16 times, inch <-> foot is 12 times. Please state which measurements are you refering to)
That's probably why England still uses it for cooking.

If those are the reasons why you claim that Imperial system is superior to the Metric system, it doesn't hold any water for me, since I'll have to whip out a ruler or measuring cup for both systems.
Edit: To furthur clarify, I'm not saying that the Imperial system is useless. I'm saying that in my case, I've only learnt the Metric system in school. I've tried memorising the Imperial system, but it's really hard when every thing has a different base. I'm still trying to remember, but nowadays, I find that a converter is much easier. Having two different systems in use at the same time means that all the time, some people will have to whip out a converter or do it manually.
And since you argue that Life >>>> academic stuff, I just want to know that my little finger is roughly 1 cm wide, which makes my school life very much easier.
Callia2007-03-09 15:08:48
Be perfectly honest, I grew up in the US, and the only measurement I have memorized is 12 inchs in a foot, and 3 feet in a yard.
Other then the metric system, which I do know quite well.
