How come?
Because it's the same as seeing a suit of Nike full plate armor. Champagne is a region in France that produces a sparkling wine that uses the brand name of Champagne It's like saying Kleenex instead of tissue. People know what you mean but tissue is the item and Kleenex is the brand. The item in game should be called "sparkling wine" not Champagne.
Xavius2008-02-15 15:44:30
If we refused to use words derived from proper nouns, we'd have a pretty neutered selection to use IG.

Oooh. I suppose that makes sense. Though, as one of those people who says "Got any Kleenex?" in lieu of "Got any tissue?" not to mention the whole Coke thing (In the South, every carbonated beverage is a coke. Some of them just happen to be named Coke. "Want a coke?" "Sure, thanks." "What kind?" "Got any root beer?" "I'm out, but I have Coke, Dr. Pepper and Diet Coke." ) it never occurred to me to see a problem with that sorta thing. I had heard Champagne was the region that the drink came from, though until you wrote that I hadn't remembered it.

It isn't a word derived from a proper noun. It is a brand name. There are regulations against its usage on other sparkling wines ranging from being banned in the EU and several other countries and severely restricted in places like the US with the vinters in Champagne constantly pushing for trademark protection worldwide. The product is sparkling wine. Champagne is a brand.

I feel sorry for you, Catarin, you must not be able to so much as look at Delport without wincing.
Nevermind that we have alfredo sauce and curry IG, and refer to them directly as such, or can use burgundy as a colour.
EDIT: Oh, nevermind. I'd forgotten about the copyright with the name and how it's guarded - that is a little different.

Huh. Sounds like the sort of thing we all should have known beforehand, but didn't. (I ask for tissues and don't drink fizzy drinks, but I still thought champagne was its own thing...)
Catarin2008-02-15 16:04:57
It's not a huge deal and it clearly doesn't bother most people. It's more in the forefront of my head I guess because wine is a hobby. I just mentioned it bothered me and explained why when asked. So there we go.
Xavius2008-02-15 16:16:48
Champagne isn't a brand name. Champagne is a blend of overfermented wine made from chardonnay grapes and two of those pinot grapes that I can never keep straight and can't be bothered to look up. Within the last century, laws were passed to protect artisan wineries in the Champagne region of France by giving them more-or-less exclusive rights to use the term champagne on their labelling.
This is a Fleury brand sparkling white wine that happens to meet all of the requirements to be called champagne by French labelling and export laws. The brand is Fleury, the contents are champagne.
This is a Heinz brand spiced tomato paste that happens to meet all of the requirements to be called ketchup by American labelling laws. The brand is Heinz, the contents are ketchup.

Terrible argument since cognac is the exact same sort of thing and we have seen that produced by fountains and even spoken about ICly by divine before.

Simply saying that divine-OKing dulls your... point.
That being said, I agree with said point, however, it certainly doesn't detract from my gameplay experience and most people aren't even going to know the difference between things like that.

What point did I have? That I cringed when I saw it..that's about it. Whether divine condone it or not, whether it's been ICly established or not, whether other people have any clue that it's OOC or not, my only point was what my personal reaction was cringing. So I guess I disagree that my point was dulled as I still cringe when I see it

Got it for only 7000 gold, and it actually makes a notable difference for my hunting. So I'm content.
Also, getting level 76. Only 4 more to reach another one of my goals.

Again, champagne is not a brand name, you're cringing at a very modern and protectionist-contrived distinction, and if you refuse to use words derived from proper nouns, you're not going to have much left to choose from.
Gwylifar2008-02-15 23:35:45
There are a lot more words like "champagne" that are just less well known, and this is the kind of thing where if you don't know about it, it doesn't bother you. So take comfort in the fact that there's a lot more like that you're already fine with.

What are you even arguing Xavius? That I am wrong to dislike seeing these kinds of terms in the game because you disagree with my opinion on the nature of the word? What difference does it make if I personally don't like it? Am I on some campaign to get this and all other similar words removed from the game? No. Do I rant on about it constantly as an affront to true RP? No. I stated simply that it bothered me, I was asked why, I explained why. I am sorry if my explanation for my feelings is not good enough for you
Arix2008-02-16 01:00:09
for reference, I wanted it to be sparkling angelic wine, but I wasn't sure if the Charites would accept that, so I went with champagne instead

This flowerpot is about a foot tall and does not differ significantly from any
other red clay flowerpot you've ever seen.
It bears the distinctive mark of Wyrden Snare Dylara Nimaet, Ward of the Rose.
A clay flowerpot is holding:
"rose100869" a midnight black rose
"rose147015" a midnight black rose
"rose163908" a bright yellow rose
"rose91073" a midnight black rose
"rose161740" an entrancing red rose
"rose165528" a brilliant white rose
I love thee flower pot.
(If my title isn't any indicator of why.. )
Plus Halamir gets raves for making me giggle.
