I remember the very first time I solved the gnome quest was with an old character of mine (Zalu, Serenguard Elf) I think he's still around actually. It was the first time I had ever played a MUD...ever, and I didn't know -anything-. I worked for about two real life days on it. Talk about an awesome feeling when I finally did it and got an honours line.

No tips!

You're allowed to give newbies tips on the Newton quests.

Pretty sure the only tips they want given are the ones that they documented themselves, which are basically who takes which corpses and who takes the chains and widgets. The guides pretty uniformly don't give advice beyond there.

EDIT: The syntax things are a different story. When you know what to do and you're having trouble making the game do it, people give directions.

No. Hints are okay (guides occasionally do give a couple of hints as well on the Newbie channel, though they're usually pretty vague). Actually giving them the solution is a problem. Vague hints, however? Why not? Just like you can often get someone to give you a hint on other Honours quests if you get stuck, you can with Newton as well (the only problem is that people tend to forget the Newton quests since they can't do 'em again later in life, which also contributes a bit to your second sentence I would imagine).

Not true at all. They usually will at least give a hint on any step of the quest.

Well then, celebrate this!

My protege and I went robe-shopping. We found a set of robes for 6000 gold, stats: 57/55. My current robes are 57/45.

However, being the nice mentor I am, I gave him the better robes. Whereupon he handed them back and said since I was more of a fighter, I should have the better robes, and he took my old robes. Whee!
