Actually, in writing, I think the rule is if it's over a certain amount (not sure what that amount is... 100? 1,000?) you're supposed to use numbers, not words. I'll look it up later (when I'm not working on forms for school sites) and be more exact. But anyway, since the medium of gameplay in Lusternia is writing, I imagine the same rules apply for numbers.
That's exactly true, but I believe the "point" of the original poster is that this isn't written communication, it's spoken, so we shouldn't use abbreviations at all, even those I use all the time in NORMAL SPEACH.

The writing rule is anything above 10 should be the digit, under 10 should be written. Ten can go either way, but you can never begin a sentence with a digit (hence why I wrote out 10 in this sentence to start). There are also rules about when you have two numbers in sequence, but I am already showing what a huge grammar nerd I am, so I will pipe down now.

Meh.
Using 'k' for thousand is a little annoying, the only time I use it IRL is when I'm being silly. It's not THAT big a deal though, I guess. I usually ignore it and pretend they said thousand. But when people talk about how they lost a number of health or they hit for a number of health or they have a certain number of con right out where folks can hear them.... That's a little more annoying.
But yeah. That's just my own opinion.
I still think that Greleag should write that book though. *urge*

Back during the Holy Celestine Empire a great summit of fighters and blacksmiths gathered to agree apon a universal scale to measure the speed, accuracy, and damage potential for weapons and the ablity to protect from both cutting and blunt attacks. The numbers you hear today are the numerical placement of the weapon or armor upon those scale. The weapon probe ability in the skill of combat is the required knowledge to judge a weapon by that scale.
Exactly what I was going to say hehe. You can, generally, put anything into numbers if you try hard enough.
QUOTE(Rauros @ Nov 3 2006, 02:19 AM) 350011
Since when has the term "k" been in any way shape or form in-character language? I'm sad to see this kind of OOC behavior day in and day out, especially in Celest. I'm sorry I don't have more examples to quote, but I see it all the time. Just stop, please. Thank you, that is all.
This has got to be THE lamest complaint I have ever heard from anyone in all of IRE. Seriously. I like several others use k on a regular basis in and out of the game. Though I'm afraid I use "grand" in real speech more often then I say "kay" heh. I see absolutely no problem with it's use in game and neither should anyone else.
QUOTE(Verithrax @ Nov 3 2006, 04:10 AM) 350065
Just because it's not acceptable doesn't mean it's not an unit. That's like saying is not a word.
ETA: I demand either official policy from the admin on weapon stats being OOC, or a reasonable backstory about the creation of the weapon stats scale, so the damn thing doesn't sit in a vacuum.
If it makes it's way into Webster - it's perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned
Stop thinking you're so important that you can demand anything so disgustingly stupid from the Admin.
QUOTE(Melanchthon @ Nov 3 2006, 10:03 AM) 350135
Really, all this fuss. The IRE model is a far cry from a role-play oriented game. I'm more surprised that people find ooc behavior surprising. Think of it like Wal-Mart...it sells a bit of everything with the intent that any random person will have a higher probability of finding something they want to buy. If that's not the environment you want to play in, you're better off shopping somewhere else than trying to change what is sold.
Now thats just one of the awesomest comparisons I've ever heard
---------------
The stupidity affliction is the worst one you all could have used to tell what NOT to do. Saying it gives you stupidity is perfectly acceptable. Much better than saying "It will make you MORE STUPID" Who the heck -really- says 'more stupid' in a sentence? "It will afflict you with stupidity," sounds FAR more intelligent and is completely plausable in an IC format. We all know what affliction means right? We all know what stupidity is right? Just because when I look at diag it says stupidity doesn't invalidate its already centuries year old meaning and make it an OOC term, does it?
Saying things like "It will give you paranoia" or "It will afflict you with stupidity" work. Things like "It'll give you bleeding" don't really mesh as well and I suppose if we all wanted to get nit picky we could stop doing it. (Could say "You'll find you bleed far easier if they.." do whatever they do) Most people I don't really think have that big a problem with it, otherwise we would stop doing it.
OOC only begins to bug me if its 1) Blatant and public or 2) disrupts RP for others.
Alright... now I feel queasy.... too much stupidity mixed with too much love.
Unknown2006-11-03 15:54:35
As far as the RW goes, 'k' seems to be perfectly acceptable in writing, and then only in an informal sense. It's unnatural when spoken. I make fun of my fiancee whenever she says something like, "New York is only two k miles away, can we drive there next week?" That's really just me being picky though. And, I'm avoiding answering such a silly question.
I guess the problem here is we're talking about speech IC, but it equates to informal writing from our perspectives of operating a character, and that's split the RPs into two camps. Yeah, that's no answer, but if your level of RP is such that you alter your written word to match a speech pattern, then 'k' would be unacceptable. If your RP extends only to actions and not colloquialisms (although 'k' is not exactly a colloquialism), then you'd probably not find it objectionable.
To the point, since we have no set standard for levels of RP yet, then we're arguing over a symptom (or symptoms) and not the main problem. Should we formally define or raise the minimum level of RP allowed and what should it encompass?

You people must have way too much time on your hands if you're about numbers used in a game where you get numbers flying out of your butt. Saying 'k' is just shortened form of saying 1000, I see nothing wrong with it. Lusternia has english as its base language, and that WILL include all the nuances the English language has developped.
Just a few skills that are convenient BECAUSE of numbers: All lists skills, Weaponprobe, Info here.
I hear people IRL say that drinking makes you stupid, I can't see why they wouldn't give the same warning about gilas. You people are bloody anal.
And no, I couldn't be bothered to read more then one page of this craziness.

...I think this thread made me slightly more stupid.
And.. I say K in real life. It's the term when you have several thousands, but if you're saying you have .5k then you're being retarded and I can understand how that'd be annoying.
Veri, go take a nap. You're getting worked up over something silly and it's a waste of your vocabulary.

I guess Lusternia tolerates a certain level of OOC behavior. This thread wasn't about one example of the use of the word "k" (I'm just one of those persons who dislikes its use). This was about the day to day OOC behavior I see in game when people are supposed to be immersed in Roleplay. Oh my! I used the word Roleplay! I sometimes wonder if anyone even knows the word anymore.
Bottom line, I guess there will always be OOC somewhere along the way, and unfortunately, even when you give someone a friendly tell to remind them that their behavior is OOC, they snap your head off, and accuse you of being an "arhpee bandit".

For those wondering about weaponprobe.
Damage is on a scale of 0 - 250. The number is the Density of the creature that a swing of the weapon will draw blood. Given average skin strength (i.e. not tae'dae) A 250 damage weapon will draw blood with the lightest of strokes against someone who's flesh density is 250 lbs/cubit
Precision is on a scale of 0 - 250. The number is the Density of the creature that a swing of the weapon will cause internal damage. Given average skin strength (i.e. not tae'dae) A 250 damage weapon will cause internal damage with the lightest of strokes against someone who's flesh density is 250 lbs/cubit
Speed is on a scale of 0 - 360. The number is the number of degrees a weapon will travel before being affected by wind resistance.. A weapon with 360 speed, will move through the air, never being slowed and could in theory move indefinitly.
Weapons that you have seen with numbers higher than this scale are just illusions

Daganev used to not know how to write. He was illetrate, and had Furloch read news posts to him.
One day, Daganev was trade minister, and then he quit. He posted on the Magnagora boards something along the linese of :
aaldlkanad adslka neadlakdj asdas'd
Which translated to "I'm really fustrated , I can't write, you all hate me, I quit!" ... and then some people helped him learn his letters at the megalith... it was good times.
edit: He also had a terrible "slave" accent, which was removed when Viravain was tired of needing a translator for Daganev, and chopped off his head growing me a new one.

I don't see what the big deal is over K instead of thousand. I've said it before, and I've heard others say it. Yes it kid of sounds silly, but I don't think that's OOC.

You know what's funny? I am ALL the time trying to use commas when dealing with gold. Like I'll type 'get 3,000 gold from pack' and of course, I'll only get 3 gold from my pack then it's all 'you do not have enough gold to buy (whatever)' and I'm all like 'Yes I do!' and then I look, and no... I don't.
