Ooh, maybe if I stare hard enough at my keyboard, I'll be able to tell its density in Kg/l!

You mean you can't?

I propose this solution: use Roman numerals.

IRE Requires some level of suspension of disbelief. You cannot expect to be fully submersed in character and be in that character's place for everything. Well, you can, but for a series of MUDs in which the context is built like IRE's are, you'll have a damn hard time of it.

Saying 15k is generally acceptable. Sure, you'd rather hear fifteen thousand, but whatever.

Saying I have to def up privately is generally acceptable, if you have to say it in public, let me get my defenses. You don't say 'I MUST PREPARE TO DEFEND MYSELF, LOL'. The things you can do to buff your character are widely known through the world, and I would say as an IC thing, as defenses. It's a mechanic of the world in which you play. You don't say 'USE YOUR FIRE OF COSMIC ENERGY ON THAT ASTRAL CREATURE!', you say 'Cosmicfire that lobstrosity.' It's sort of the same thing.

Bashing still pisses me off. You're going to go hunt creatures, you're going hunting.

Levels is a definate no-no, they're circles of experience, and talking about them is generally accepted.

Talk about damage in tells if you have to, I wouldn't be so overboard as to say 'You greatly wounded me!' when someone asks you in a tell how much damage you did.

As for weapons, people that market the stats are sacks of douche, plain and simple. You say 'Weapons for sale!' they send you a tell asking for stats, and then you give them the stats. Come on people.

You'll have a lot more fun if you try to generalize your experience, realizing that a good number of paying customers aren't looking for a 'totally submersive world' so much as a 'place to be something they aren't'.

Isn't D = 500?

You can't use CCD then, nor XD ... unsure.gif

Maybe you meant 50? That's L. tongue.gif

Meh, I always got those mixed up. Stupid Romans.

No, wait, I mean, that was on purpose! It was Verithrax making that mistake in the example! See, I'm making fun of Verithrax! Peer pressure, I couldn't help myself. You laugh now, yes?

Here are some rules that are broken a lot.. the ones I'm mentioning are the ones that actually bother me.

1) Testing skills at the Nexi
2) Asking how much damage they do when they hit them with such and such attack
3) Random afflicting.. anywhere, without warning
4) When people say, "deffing up" and then spam the shit out of everyone.
5) Spam of any kind.. emotes.. says.. whatever.

Sometimes I slip and do some of these.. like saying comms instead of commodities and GR/CR instead of guild/city rank.. stupid stuff like that. It's hard to be completely IC when talking to novices and that's understandable, but you should make it known that you're going OOC when you're teaching them or else you're just training them to be OOC as well. tongue.gif

Fine, forget the stupidity example, replace it with ugliness, or bleeding. Who says "Gives you ugliness?"

And could someone please explain how "Deffing up" and "Rezz" and "12hp" are IC?

Deffing up and Rezz, I agree with.

12hp however I do not. I as a player, have NO clue what losing 12 hp means, or losing 1000 hp means. I don't know if its a cut a scratch, a lessening of my will to live, a level of Pain... no clue.

So if someone started talkin to me and NOT using the hp numbers then I'll have to send theim private tells saying "HUH? whats that mean?

However, the chrachters know exactly what losing 12hp means.. they feel it, they can explain it to eachother. when a player types 12hp, it just means that the charachter is saying something that to mean,means 12 hp;

well resurrection is a skill, shortening a word can be IC, same for deffing up, which is short for 'I'm putting on my defensive spells'

I really don't see how you can all say oh that is not IC, look at RL military

terms like 'DEFCON, SITREP, CO, XO, SATCOM, RECON, REKI,...' are all shortened versions of other words that later became official abbreviations.

So a military organisation in Lusternia could easily make use of abbreviations for fast ordering like 'rezz, deffing'

There is however, no excuse for 12hp

One thing that profoundly irritates me are people bringing the game's interface (Stats, object numbers) IC. That's like saying, ICly, that you hear says in cyan.

People IRL "see" speech. They're called synesthetes or something.

To this list I would like to add: ratting at the nexus, singing bard songs on autoplay at the nexus (Mitch), being an ass at the nexus, being overtly disgustingly snuggly at the nexus, people bragging despite the listener clearly not being interested yet trying not to be rude, and... more.

Those're annoyances, not violations of role. Wrong thread. Shoo.

Stop whining about numbers, otherwise we will end up like a bad parody of a Monty Python skit.

I think the whole reason Rauros started this thread is to make people waste time discussing it endlessly. I mean, who really gives a censor.gif if someone says 15k instead of 15,000? There are so many less trivial things that could be discussed, like the tracking issue, or bard armor, or the lack of wood. Get over yourself, Rauros

I guess Lusternia tolerates a certain level of OOC behavior. This thread wasn't about one example of the use of the word "k" (I'm just one of those persons who dislikes its use). This was about the day to day OOC behavior I see in game when people are supposed to be immersed in Roleplay. Oh my! I used the word Roleplay! I sometimes wonder if anyone even knows the word anymore.

Bottom line, I guess there will always be OOC somewhere along the way, and unfortunately, even when you give someone a friendly tell to remind them that their behavior is OOC, they snap your head off, and accuse you of being an "arhpee bandit".

RP bandits are important, but it's really a matter of proportion.
