Are you sure that's the whole story? Most Grimm stories aren't all arb like that...
Yes, that's the whole story. Unless two different translations, across multiple websites are all missing something like that.
Here's another one that has absolutely zero ending.
QUOTE
The Golden Key
Once in the wintertime when the snow was very deep, a poor boy had to go out and fetch wood on a sled. After he had gathered it together and loaded it, he did not want to go straight home, because he was so frozen, but instead to make a fire and warm himself a little first. So he scraped the snow away, and while he was thus clearing the ground he found a small golden key. Now he believed that where there was a key, there must also be a lock, so he dug in the ground and found a little iron chest. "If only the key fits!" he thought. "Certainly there are valuable things in the chest." He looked, but there was no keyhole. Finally he found one, but so small that it could scarcely be seen. He tried the key, and fortunately it fitted. Then he turned it once, and now we must wait until he has finished unlocking it and has opened the lid. Then we shall find out what kind of wonderful things there were in the little chest.

Actually, that one could have a meaning. More of one than the other, at least that I could find in a quick perusal.

Because that's what fae sometimes do?
Though, the translations vary. In one, its a girl, and when she dies, she looks very happy. So it could be interpreted as being freed from an unhappy life, or even a punishment to the mother for disregarding her child. *shrug*

I was only able to find one website with the version that you posted. This is the one I have, with the girl being happy.
There was once a poor woman who had two children. The youngest had to go
every day into the forest to fetch wood. Once when she had gone a long
way to seek it, a little child, who was quite strong, came and helped
her industriously to pick up the wood and carry it home, and then before
a moment had passed the strange child disappeared. The child told her
mother this, but at first she would not believe it. At length she brought
a rose home, and told her mother that the beautiful child had given her
this rose, and had told her that when it was in full bloom, he would
return. The mother put the rose in water. One morning her child could not
get out of bed, the mother went to the bed and found her dead, but she
lay looking very happy. On the same morning, the rose was in full bloom.
To me, I think that just the last part changes it's meaning. But that could just be me.

I agree, but its not quite as "Beware the roses!" as the other one. :-P

Kind of reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth.
Anyway, a rose to Faragan, for being a great person and adopted father. And spoiling me, that's loads of fun.
A rose to Kaalak and Neerth for being RP-driven scholars who are very interesting to feed and interact with on a daily basis.
A rose to Talkan who let me buy his system at a steal and also gives support. Incredibly helpful.
A rose to everyone who deals with me constantly nagging for spars and then asking endless questions about things... you must have incredibly patience.
And a rose to all the Magnagorans and enemied Serenwilders who fight as fair as "anti-Light" people in a game can, and for not being griefers in the way of killing everything and anything just because you bought the credits with real money.

Dylara is getting a lot of props lately, but I'd like to add mine. A rose to Dylara for believing in Danae even though Danae feels completely and utterly inadequate.
And Kalodan, for being funny. And a not so shabby Keeper either.

Going to add to this one. Half the things being done right now, probably would not have started or been anywhere near completion without him. (Stones ring any bells? )
Gelo2007-03-02 10:00:25
Yeah, he said first plan as GA would be the the "erection (pun intended) of the Standing Stones."
EDIT: Yes. The "(pun inteded)" is also a part of his post.

A rose to Cairam, again. This has nothing to do with the fact that she demanded me to either!
and for being the most wonderful woman in the world, and traveling half the globe for me.
I hope you all find companions as wonderful as her...
but there will always be just one Cairam

Rose to Pentu for holding the guild together all this time... It really would have just went kaput without you always being around.
Rose to Yeralih for being the one who brought me to this point. It was great.
Rose to Verithrax, Angel, Shiri and Kromsh for being there when I needed someone to talk to.
Rose to Ashteru for wrongly being emo'd at about he-knows-what (sorry :/).

A rose to Lord Ayridion for giving me great time in hunting him around and for his (annoyingly) Falcon for giving me a good time to be together (for like, 3 minutes).
A rose to Saaga, Relina, Doman, Shric, Noala, Lomasi, Eole, Jroem, Rhysus, Wuylinfe and Isluna for keeping up with me and helping in running the Cantors.
A rose to Forren for helping me get Conglutination. No need to pray, ha!

Okay, here goes the list...
A rose to Queen Shayle for the being like a mother and kicking my butt into high gear when I get lazy, and for being understanding and listening and holding together the most awesome guild ever.
A rose to Prince Druken for always pointing out that there is something I could be doing, and giving me the confidence to do it, and not being afraid to tell me when I screw up.
A rose to Genevieve for listening to me whine and then cheering me up with offers to go dismember folks for me and lots of <3.
A rose to Evette for being the most kickass friend in Lusty and out of it, and for being the most sick and twisted little ray of murderous sunshine this world has ever seen, being the greatest drinking buddy ever in the real world. (Girl, you had better call me on your way to the hospital, I don't care if it's 3am, I will find a way to that maternity ward waiting room if I have to murder or sell my soul to do it.)
A rose to each and every Shadowdancer, like a family, looking out for eachother and every single Shadowbound and Penumbra with their unending inquisitiveness. You make it worthwhile for me to log in every day.
A rose to Master Chief, you do wonders and never cease to amuse and amaze, and every member of your guild shows it.
A rose to Xin, Kundu, and Luccian for always being there to cheer me up.
A rose to the Harbingers for turning out friends and many of the greatest writers and scholars I've known, each and every one of you. Loves to Daedalion, Arel, Vionne, Morshoth, and Elsiani...and probably many more I've forgotten.
A rose to all of Glomdoring as a whole, though I've probably actually given 90% of you assorted flowers and cookies already, it can't be said enough.
A rose to the Eternal Assembly for keeping me laughing and keeping my brain-ferret in spasms daily.
And a rose to everyone else, for keeping the Basin a fun and interesting place to be, even when the world tries to end on a regular basis.
