How do you take away a soul?
Soulless didn't have a soul to begin with

The lack of soul is a very interesting phenomenon worth investigating ingame.
Its not so simple as far as I can tell, and I think its what gives them their devourous nature.

Where St. Tresalyne is concerned, there doesn't appear to be much record of him, beyond that found in the Seminary. Since the histories cite Dionamus the Healer as the first to discover Celestia, it seems plausible that, in his absence after the Merging, mortalkind simply forgot about Celestia until St. Tresalyne rediscovered such using Astrology. From your quote, Tresalyne was, most likely, an Aquamancer at the time of his breakthrough.

I always thought St. Tresalyne founded the plane of Celestia... so he was an Aquamancer at the time, and later converted?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Celestines were supposed to have been founded by a group of devoted (fanatical?) Aquamancers not too long after the initial discovery of Celestia.
