I guess Veo's story is proof that too many college students are under the impression that their opinions matter.

I voted for the first time today, and it was the most unenjoyable experience ever. I turned 18 two months after the last elections which stunk, so I was all excited to vote today. Granted it was on campus (I registered in the county my school is at so I didn't have to deal with an absentee ballot and don't really care for North Carolina ), and I guess they underestimated how many people would turn up because I had to wait 2 hours to vote, at 2pm. It was totally ridiculous :|. I can't even imagine how long people had to wait closer to closing.
My fiance also had to wait hours at 2pm... apparently thats when everyone thinks nobody else will be voting. I voted at 7am and there was nobody but crazy looking people.

I swear these poor senior citizens who volunteer at the polls around here don't get to talk to anyone much.
"Zomg, look at all your hair!" translated into old lady speach comes out as "oh, that's nice dear, I guess you aren't catholic then?" Old people are cute.
10 minutes to vote? My line was 2 people long, me and the person walking in behind me. It took me a minute or two at most between the time I wanted in and out.
Edit:Oh, and those robo calls, I got one final one at around 6pm. The recording was frantic and it started out by saying "This is your FINAL WARNING! You must vote republican at the polls to protect america!"

How absolutely extraordinary. Surely the freedom to vote goes hand in hand with the freedom not to vote.
Behold, the power of compulsory voting. I've NEVER heard of anyone having to wait to vote more than few minutes, ever, until that post - and, of course we have the option to not vote. You walk in, get your name crossed out, take your pieces of paper, walk to the voting area, write "Anarchy" or "Donkey" or "Not Voting" or nothing on the piece of paper, and then put your vote in the ballot box. Done and done.

Voting lines correlate to population density per polling place, and the flow of people to and from the polls at set times, due to work shifts, or class schedules (at colleges).

Meh I liked Santorum.

I've been listening to voter coverage tonight, taking a break from my studying. I'm shocked at it. I really am surprised with how it seems like things are turning out. I realized that the democrats could take the house, and pretty much expected that. I didn't really think that there would be a chance of them getting the senate.
I did, in the senate race here, vote democrate but it didn't do much. Probably because I live in a state that still supports Bush 60%+

Election time is a good time to share this. Convert to a republican today - we want your soul!
On a serious note, not meaning to be offensive, simply that good satire shouldn't be missed.

A fun site I enjoyed this election was: Dontvote.org . Are you aware enough of current events to vote? One of my friends didn't even know who Cheny was. It was so depressing.

How long until we find out how the vote went? Shall I haunt the Fox News website for pre-result results?
Anarias2006-11-08 09:06:03
Looks like its a lock for the Democrats taking control of both the Congress and the Senate.
In the Utah state elections my candidate for congress got 1.32% of the vote. I guess she'll have to go back to teaching piano lessons

I was hunting around to see if anyone came up with map yet, of who won the senate races in which states, and who one the house races in which states and I came across these. These are from the 2004 presidential race in the USA, but I found them interesting, red is a republican win blue a democratic win.
Picture one (shown below) is geographical, broken up into states.
Picture two (shown below) is broken up into counties.
Picture three (shown below) is counties by population. I messed up the size of this one.
Picture four (shown below) is counties by population with percentages taken into account dark blue being a big democratic win in the county, bright red being a large republican lead and shades depending on how close the win was on either side.
I just found this all highly interesting and felt the need to share it. I'm still on the look out for results from 2006. I'd just much rather show pictures then post websites with huge massive lists of the (97% of the polling places checked in) estimates.

I was tempted, at least in the Orin Hatch election, to vote for one of the lesser parties. That, or Bugs Bunny, which I ended up voting for on the sherrif (I've always wanted to, and with the Sherrif being this very overweight man, with about three heart attacks already, I just couldn't support him. And there was no one else to vote for.) However, I figured that if there was ANY chance of getting Hatch out, that I had to go for it.
Dunno if you're talking about senate, though.

as cool at those maps are... the population ones are really unhelpfull.
time magainze had a similar "purple" map, but it didn't distort it for population.

It failed.
Pennsylvania, however, managed to vote to spend $20,000,000 we don't have in order to pay Gulf War veterans from the state a few hundred dollars bonus. Not a bad thing, really, but it's $20mil we don't have, and shouldn't be borrowing to pay for.
I'd much rather we spent 1/20 of that and increased voter turnout.
