--With this skillset would probably need to go a BrokenWing affliction to make this skill not as powerful, and perhaps a Demesne affect that grabs the legs to prevent the person from flying.
If a skill has RIDING under it, it means I propose that it should be usable while on a flying mount.
The Flying skill is a collection of abilities relating to your general prowess with flying. As your skill in Flying increases, various skills will open up to you that will make flying a good method of transporting yourself through the Basin, as well as a passable method of fighting an opponent.
Inept:
Winds: As your skill in Flying increases, you gain the chance to resist being blown around. This becomes a 33% chance at Transcendant.
Novice:
Groundglance: Lets you look at the ground while flying, takes only half the balance of regular glancing.
RIDING
Apprentice:
Harry: You can dive down to harry someone below. (Takes balance, FEARs opponent)
RIDING
Capable:
Swoop: With a controlled swoop, you can grab an item from below. (Takes 3/4 of the balance that landing, getting the item and flying again would take.)
Adept:
Knockdown: By flying straight at an airborne opponent, you can attempt to knock them out of the sky. Note that there is a chance of messing up so badly that you yourself fall to the ground.
RIDING
Master:
Streamline: If you wish, you may PREEN before flying, setting your feathers into a streamlined position. This allows you to fly one more room before getting the "Now, now..." message.
Dart: Fly two rooms at a time by DARTing in a direction.
Gifted:
Whirlwind: By snapping your wings sharply you can attempt to blow someone out of the room. It's very hard to shift someone who's standing, easier to shift a flyer. Size plays an important part in this one.
Drop: You can attempt to drop an object on a target's head from above. Heavier objects do more damage. Accomplishing this is quite difficult, and the chance to miss is almost doubled while controlling a mount.
RIDING
Expert:
Follow: You are now sufficiently adept in the ways of flying to be able to follow someone on the ground.
RIDING
Hoist: You can lift someone two sizes smaller than you into the sky, though this takes double the balance of normal flight. You can also attempt to DROP them on other people to add insult to injury, or simply release them to fall from the air.
Virtuoso:
Balance: You are better-balanced, and as such have a small chance of resisting the effects of a Geyser or Greater Pentagram. This increases to 10% at Transcendant.
SpeedyFlight: You can sprint while flying.
Fabled:
WingLift: A form of hovering that lets you stand even if your legs are broken by supporting your weight on your wings rather than your legs. Balance and eq take 1.5 times longer to recover while standing like this.
Aiming: You are more accurate when attempting to drop things on people.
Mythical:
Wings: You may draw on the power of your Nexus to grow feathery wings. These wings, though slower and more unwieldy than normal wings, are usable for flight.
Transcendant:
Dive: By hurling yourself from the skies at a target, you can slam yourself into them, causing damage and knocking them down. (Damages your target, with said damage increasing as your size goes up. You also take damage, though not as much as your target.)

I really like a lot of those skills.
My comments:
1) I wonder to what extent they'd give an unbalanced advantage to those who can fly. I can't. Don't have it as a guildskill or a racial skill. Could it be worked so that if you were on a flying mount with a decent enough riding skill you could do the same?
2) I also think you need more skills. Inept to trans is a fair few credits, and one skill per skill-level seems a little inadequate. Could you have one where, depending on comparative size, you can pick players up? A sort of less powerful hoist equivalent?

Added Hoist and SpeedyFlight.
Provided that the wing-disabling affliction is implemented, this shouldn't be too big of an advantage. Most of the abilities can be countered by either breaking wings or geysering etc. It should be quite difficult to accomplish any of these skills against a prepared opponent.
As for winged mounts, I will add RIDING next to skills that I think would work well with mounts.

This skill is far from overpowered. I'd even go as far as to call it underpowered.
Featherfall is quite useless for a Mythical skill, since levitate (which can be enchanted on rings for everyone to use, not just mages) does basically the same, only better.
Drop: well, pure damage never kills. Even "teh overpowered" Ixion kills with more than just pure damage (contrary to what some people say).
Harry: meh. Fear. 75% of guilds are resistant, the rest will just COMPOSE.
WingLift, Hoist - these are interesting and good. I like these two most.
Most of these abilities are too weak because you've given them additional disadvantages in fear of them being overpowered. Trust me - they wouldn't be. So Follow doesn't need a chance of detection, Knockdown doesn't have to have a chance of messing up, etc.
But still, I don't want to sound overly negative but I do not think a common skill which benefits only 2 of Lusternia's races will be ever implemented. And since it helps only Trill, Faelings and (some abilities only!) people with flying mounts, can it still be called Common?

My idea of this is it can be used by anyone with any sort of flying ability. Thusly, any skill that lets you fly or grow wings would grant you the ability to use this skill. Also, Aethercraft can only be used by people with Aetherships, but it's still a common skill
Perhaps there could be a skill to replace Featherfall with Wings?
Wings: Draw upon the power of your Nexus to grow feathery wings.
Wings from this skill would perhaps be slower in balance etc than normal wings to make having natural wings still be a racial advantage. This would make the skillset avaliable to more.
Anyways, I'll edit what's there and remove some restrictions.

I'd just like to point out that I'm fairly certain preen is unique to Trill...
Ghaloaire2006-11-19 03:20:28
Hmm. Well then, the skill would give you the option.
I just realized, though, that it depends on the type of wing you have. Nihilists get scaly wings, Faelings get butterfly wings and Celestians and Faelings get feathery wings, I think. If I remember right. I guess the text will have to be changed for that.

...except it gives everyone -With- wings another advantage. I know normal flight can be ruined with geyser and whatnot, but giving them even more extra skills? Just doesn't make sense to me. Trill would never be able to die. They regenerate for flying, and now they can attck while flying? You just killed everyone without wings unless they get to mythical, and whats that even then they get killed by those who started with wings?
edit: Oh, and I do see the point in having "artifical" wings worse, but still.
Welcome to the Rule of the Birds, I think not.

You don't know what you're talking about, really. Not to be mean or anything. But none of these "attacks" will add anything very strong to anyone's offense. Winged races will not have a particular advantage against those who are not. If anything, it's not strong enough. (And Trill can always fight while flying, if the opponent flies as well..this skill won't change anything for better or worse).
But anyway, I don't really see a point to the skill. With the current abilities, no one would learn it. Not enough utility or combat skills, or even nifty RP ones. Think about it, talk to people, think of new abilities people would like to learn. And don't worry about it being overpowered, restrictions can always be added later.

Attacking from the air without staffing, even if its not much is giving the flyers something that no groundpounders can have until mythical in the skill set. I know what I'm talking about.
(Yes theres more than staffing, example)

I like it, though it needs a little beefing up. I don't see any problem with this, just like people didn't see any problem when they wanted artifact wings.
Unknown2006-11-19 07:19:04
My problem with this idea is I don't see how it would work with brooms, since they're not wings, or technically mounts; they don't fall into either category for those purposes. >_<
Also, with this skillset you need mythical to get wings, riding only needs 66% fabled, and you get other skills as well.
I did like the dart suggestion, but a lot of the others didn’t seem worth it 33% this... 10% that…
The droping of objects in particular would be exceedingly hard to balance, we've got some objects that weight practically nothing, and some that weight 5000 pounds or more.

I'd actually not be particularly fond of this being a "common" skillset, even if you do allow people to "grow their own" as it were. It's a good idea and well thought out, but flying combat.... web -> concussions -> pwned. I know this all too well. Basically, I'm saying nobody would use it.

I'd be happy with racial miniskills, it'd be cool to have just a few skills that you could learn to boost up some natural skills fan that divine spark etc.

Gosh, if there were racial miniskills, I'd have to reincarnate back to Viscanti. But I'd love that...

It would be cool, then trill and faelings could learn to use their ability to fly in ways like mentioned above but in a way more stylised to them. For example a faeling is size four naturally, without the enlarge enchant they would never be able to lift anyone. However a trill could make sense with such a skill and the streamline ability, while a faelings small wings might suit winglift and their small frame might work better with the balance skill.

It's a nice idea, but more like a 'minor detail'... There's so many that has to be done first before this becomes interesting.
Geran2007-05-07 10:09:52
I'd have to say that I'm very much against this skillest, since it overlaps so much with Totems->Crow.
