I was really freaking bored a few days ago, and decided to create a height chart for the races of Lusternia based on their Size stat

Looking at humans, the size stat is 12. Seems to me that if average human height is taken at 6 feet, then each size level denotes six inches in height, meanding that the races should look something like this.

RACE.......................SIZE........................AVG HEIGHT (feet)'(inches)''
Human......................12.............................6'
Dwarf........................8..............................4'
Elfen..........................11............................5' 6''
Dracnari.....................14............................7'
Faeling.......................4..............................2'
Furrikin......................6..............................3'
Krokani......................16............................8'
Aslaran.......................12...........................6'
Loboshigaru................13............................6' 6''
Mugwump...................12............................6'
Merian........................12............................6'
Orclach......................15.............................7' 6''
Igasho.......................18.............................9'
Tae'Dae.....................15.............................7' 6''
Taurian......................15.............................7'6''
Trill............................10.............................5'
Viscanti.......................13............................6'6''
Lucidian.......................12............................6'

Sure, this looks pretty nice, but every member of a race can't all be the same height can they? So, if we take it that humans range between 5 and 7 feet in height, then the difference either way is one foot off of the average, meaning that plus or minus 1/6 of the average will give us a spread of height possible for that race.

RACE.......................SIZE....................AVG HEIGHT(feet)'(inches)''............HEIGHT SPREAD
Human.....................12...........................6'.............................................5' - 7'
Dwarf*.....................8............................4'..............................................3'4'' - 4'6''
Elfen........................11..........................5' 6''..........................................4'7'' - 6'5''
Dracnari...................14...........................7'.............................................5'10'' - 8'2''
Faeling......................4............................2'.............................................1'8'' - 2'4''
Furrikin.....................6............................3'.............................................2'6'' - 3'6''
Krokani.....................16..........................8'..............................................6'8'' - 8'6''
Aslaran.....................12..........................6'..............................................5' -7'
Loboshigaru...............13..........................6' 6''.........................................5'5'' - 7'7''
Mugwump..................12..........................6'..............................................5' - 7'
Merian.......................12..........................6'..............................................5' - 7'
Orclach......................15..........................7' 6''..........................................6'3'' - 8'9''
Igasho.......................18..........................9'.............................................7'6'' - 10'6''
Tae'Dae.....................15..........................7' 6''.........................................6'3'' - 8'9''
Taurian......................15..........................7'6''.........................................6'3'' - 8'9''
Trill...........................10..........................5'.............................................4'2'' - 5'10''
Viscanti**..................13..........................6'6''..........................................5'5'' - 7'7''
Lucidian.....................12..........................6'.............................................5' - 7'

*personally, I always imagined Dwarves a little taller on average, not that much shorter than people. In my mind, they were always more like an average of 5 feet in height
**it makes sense to me that the height of a Viscanti in the description should match whatever race they are supposed to resemble. But I'm just sayin.

Oh, and just for kicks and giggles, I figured out the height extremes of an Igasho and a Faeling based on the Guiness record for tallest (8ft 11in Robert) and shortest (22 in Gul Mohammed) person.

Extremes for an Igasho: Shortest: 2 feet 8 inches
Tallest: 13 feet 4 inches

Extremes for a Faeling: Shortest: 8.8 inches
Tallest: 3 feet 6 inches
Note that I did these last two couple just for the heck of it, so the math might not be spot on. If anyone finds anything I figured wrong, please, don't be afraid to say so.

...too...much...time...on...hands...

If you're still bored, you can convert everything to the metric system. smile.gif

Well, true. It has been observed for some time that, in IRE games, 1 size = 6 inches of height.

However, this is in my opinion incorrect. Size doesn't affect height only, but mostly mass - that is why Tae'Dae are
QUOTE
an extremely large people, though their size is more in their
breadth rather than their height

And that is why Elfen have 11 size, even though they tend to be as tall as humans - because of their general litheness. It is even more so for the Trill, who have 10 size (average theoretical height = 5 feet), yet we read:
QUOTE
They are very graceful and quite tall (though their
hollow bones make them rather delicate).

EDIT: Still, quite a chart. Just pointing out that a simple conversion of 1 size = 6 inches is too much of a simplication, and is incorrect in some races' cases.

I like this topic, good work.
Sylphas2006-11-14 00:21:56
*nod* I always had Sylphas at three feet, then I bumped it up 6" because Joli was bigger. halo.gif

I even had a zmud script that would change my description size based on my size stat, whenever I got enlarged or diminished or racechanged.

That's a perfect way of looking at it, and is how I've always viewed it.

In my opinion dwarves and faelings are generally -around- the same height, but faelings are half a dwarves 'size', it's a perfect example of how mass plays into it. There are faeling denizen's in the serenwilde who are 4ft. (and you have a 1'8"-2'4" range)

Here's another:
human 12 (average)
elfen 11(taller but much thinner) One of my favorite parts of Zenji's description is as follows: "His body is tall and thin, on the average of his people, as if they had been stretched into a more perfect form by a divine hand of ages past."
Trill 10(tall, has huge wings, but has hollow bones)

Xavius2006-11-14 01:02:59
I'm with Cuber on this one. Size, in my eyes, reflects weight. If you assume that mass is fairly evenly distributed in the depth of a humanoid (which it isn't, but it's not worth the math to compensate), and that people are approximately three times as tall as they are wide, you get each square foot as one size point. From there, it's just math.

Size______Height
3 ............... 3'0
4 ............... 3'6
5 ............... 3'10
6 ............... 4'3
7 ............... 4'7
8 ............... 4'11
9 ............... 5'2
10...............5'6
11...............5'9
12...............6'0
13...............6'3
14...............6'6
15...............6'8
16...............6'10
17...............7'1
18...............7'3

...and so on. Adjust for racial features as necessary.

Someone translate this one metric system!!!

And how about titans and demigods. I wonder if there is any titan or demi with size higher then 3. Most likely evryone are size 1. doh.gif
Shaeden2006-11-14 20:34:20
Err, this is also assuming each point of height is a consistant measurement. For instance, it could be that the further from 12 you get the less a point is "weighted," much like the attribute points

In metric.

Well looks like arundor posted part of this first, but seeing as I did all this work I'm going to post anyway, and forget about converting the rest of the thread. Here is Uruboroths post completely converted(metric in bold).

No way! Dracnari are way taller! I am, anyway tongue.gif -cough- 8'6" -cough- I dwarf many an Igasho. They're too tall. So are the Orclachs. And the Krokani. -nod me-

I second that.

Maybe it'd be sticky-worthy if it were in Survival...Scrying Pool too. Hmm.
Seraku2008-07-30 19:44:29
Thanks for the chart, I was shocked that Dracnari are so tall. My previous description had me at like 5'8". I changed it right after i read this.
Gwylifar2008-07-30 21:50:36
This would be a nice addition to the Races page on the Scrying Pool, sure.
Casilu2008-07-30 21:54:59
Wow, we really are good at bringing things back from the dead.
Hazar2008-08-02 22:09:20
Shiribot can produce the more useful chart that Estarra gave us at some point with a visual comparison of the races, I'm sure.
