Ok, so I was looking at the cameo of the changeling, and it got me thinking. What are the origins of the changeling race? How do changlings rp what they are? Does the cameo magically change you somehow so you can shapeshift, or does it merely unlock the powers you had all along? And if so, are they descended from a shapeshifting elder god? I tried to find something on it in game, but there wasn't anything.
Hiriako2006-11-21 08:12:41
I play the cameo as being nothing but a mark of birth. The character is born as a changeling, he just needed to learn to use it.
As to finding information? None. The gods have no clue when I've asked. I've not spoken to all, but many.

Well I remember Terentia stating that changelings are curious creatures who bear all the shards and yet none.
Unknown2006-11-21 09:27:13
Would be nice if, at some point, we got that information. For now, every changeling does it her own way (if does at all). I think it's fine as long as she doesn't try to enforce it as an absolute truth, because... we don't know the truth behind changelings.

Why can't you just role-play that the cameo itself imbues the magical power to shift racial forms?

Some people do! But it costs them an extra 50 credits.

Ah, true.

I personally use the "cameo is magic" theory, because Tervic's shard is still trill.

I have kids. So then changelings just act all mysterious and don't answer anyones questions about where they come from.
Ialie2006-11-21 11:28:32
I have a different story of how I became a changeling. I had my cameo changed so that I could role play it that way.
Ialie is consistent with the fact that she was born a faeling there is no question about that. She has a twin brother that does not have her changeling powers. The story is in my HISTORY file or something. Few people bother to write or read those, but the short version is that a gift was given to her, an onyx cameo, and something was wrong with it, she became attached to it obsessively, always having it with her.
The problem progressed and she grew sickly. The cameo was making her sick and killing her, it was causing her to change, her skin was going gray and scaly, pieces of her were rotting. Her friends who were with her at the end of it tried just taking the item away but that seemed to cause her great pain.
Blah this was supposed to be short. So yeah anyway she begged to die. Someone killed her. The fates decided it wasn't her time but they couldn't not send her back because the cameo ... an entity in itself was bound to her. It claimed her and wanted to destroy her. So... the fates tied the threads of the cameo and Ialie together and proclaimed that the entity in the cameo would also cease to exist when Ialie did, their fates were tied and they were bound.
In the story it makes more sense, but the point is Ialie isn't a changeling.
I came up with the story because being born a changeling didn't seem to fit in with my story as Ialen was my twin brother.

Cool story, but highly customized...
Anyway, I try to 'invent' some Dracnari Culture through my RP and justify it IC because 'that's the way I grew up', but it hardly works. There should be threads for these things so all people can brainstorm together and concoct some sort of universal know-how of 'That's the way it is!'...
Oh wait, that's what this thread is for!
Pity I'm not a Changeling... Never really thought about how I'd RP it...
Aiakon2006-11-21 13:54:28
If they weren't so damn expensive, I'd buy a cameo. After all, it's the ultimate example of mind over matter. Naturally I'd customise it as some sort of tainted powerstone or geomantic cookie of doom. Alternately, I could just claim that I'd learned to unlock my mixed-race viscanti heritage, but that would be dull.

Then there is a cute little baby changeling born. Then someone kidnaps the baby, kills it, skins it, and finally makes themselves a fortune selling the skin as a cameo.
Enjoy your artifacts everyone.

Gwylifar made some sort of attempt at this, long time ago.

Reminds me of bazillions of poor chinchillas dying just so one snooty woman can have something to wear. Sad.
IG though, great idea.

Yummy.
Ok, never really had much interest in these, though I hear they are nice if you want to get the stat advantage from one race without the mess of dieing and changing races fully and blah..blah..blah..
This small ivory cameo is attached to a black velvet ribbon that can be worn on
the throat. There is the silhouette of a woman carved into the cameo, which
slowly shifts amongst the various races.
It weighs 1 ounce(s).
With the way they look, I think Ialie's background (which I have read, I did look it up one day a long time ago) really fits along the lines of how they look, though I am not saying I would disagree with any who RP another way of it. I think that it would be interesting to see some bits of stroy line attached to the changeling race some where along the lines.

"cameo7748" an onyx cameo
Dangling from a dark green ribbon is a stone cut from pure, polished onyx. A
filigree of frost upon ivy has been carved and lined with silver, appearing
raised over the dark gem. Delicate leaves of translucent emerald in silver twine
around each other to cradle a single tear of summer at their heart. Though
otherwise pristine, time has painted a flowing patina of colour across much of
the filigree, the play of available light occasionally pulling strange shapes
from within the tangled leaves.

Be cool to find out more about Changelings on a whole. It's the one Artifact I'd actually consider saving for above all. Yet, finding out more could help out everyone. Though, its also kinda really cool that people are able to completely forge their own RP with them.
