Racial Skillset (or Miniskillset)

Back to Ideas.

Reading some recent D&D books, both Monte Cook and Unearthed Arcana have created things such as Racial Classes and Archetypes, where people get more skills as they get more experienced, adding to the racial abilities.

What if Lusternia had this? Either a new general skillset, maybe called "ideal", "racecunning", or something like that. Or perhaps these would be available in other general skillsets, such as Discipline, Discernment, or Environment. The abilities would be designed to flesh out the racial archetypes, and perhaps offset the racial drawbacks by compensation elsewhere. In this game, people are more worried about balance/equilibrium than anything else sometimes. It would also make racial choices more important and varied.

Here are some ideas based on races.

QUOTE

Aslaran:

NasalDiscipline: Can randomly detect scents, bonuses to tracking (if that skillset is known).
Pounce: Can pounce into another room, with a bonus to attack. Stacks with acrobatics.

Dwarf:

TumbleRoll: You have a greater speed when tumbling (if you have that skillset).
GroundSense: You can passively sense elementals or people burrowing underneath you.
MinerCunning: If you do a commodities quest involving precious metals, there is a bonus to what you receive.
GoldIntuition: Get an exact count of how many gold coins are on the floor.

Lucidian

EmotionControl: Bonus to Resist Emotional Attacks (Panic, Shyness, Rage, Lust/Love).
GemIntuition: If a jeweler, can cut raw gems with less chance of flaws.

Trill

HollowTumble: Can resist damage if they roll with an attack, which has the side effect of forcing them out of a room.
WindRoot: Resist Gust attacks.

Faeling:

FlutterFeet: Passive resistance to pit traps.
Batwing: Appear to be a bat flittering outbout when in Wyrded Wood.

Furrikin:

ActiveShed: Shedding causes others to sneeze or eyes to water, taking balance from those in the room.
AnimalSympathy: Natural animals are more friendly to you. Bonus to use Ecology.
AnimalStrike: Bonus to combat against normal animals.

Merian:

Swimspeed: Move faster in water.
Fishstrike: Bonus to strike aquatic creatures. (Including other Merians and Mugwumps).
FishCatch: Get the hunter skill to catch a fish automatically. (Bonus if an actual Hunter).

Any thoughts on this? This could be a lot of work, but it might be worth it and make racial type better both in terms of combat ability as well as adding to the RP. It also gives player more things to spend credits on.

I thought I'd highlight the ones that I have a problem with but I ended up quoting nearly all of them.

They are just ideas, I'm sure more thoughts occur about game balance, I'm just thinking of ways to make race more important and more useful in the game. Some might be passive, others active and cost power or something like that.

This would be cool... but what about humans? Isn't it kind of entirely anti-human to have any racial abilities whatsoever?

Unless our skillset was called 'luck' or something similar.

I don't have time to do all 18 races, guys. I was just throwing out examples as ideas.

I like the idea, but I'd prefer rather weak flavor abilties that you passively gain instead of using lessons. It just doesn't make much sense to learn a skill about being your race. Maybe you would get more skills as you go up in levels, spend more time in the realm, etc.

Yeah, I'd like that too.

Ich auch.

The concept I had was based on the D&D concept of Racial Levels, where if you invest in them you are either "more pure" of the race or you learn the "customs" of the race so you get better abilities.

Maybe just add these as "hidden" skills to the skillsets, only accessible to a race. I dunno. I just want to see there be more advantages to different races.

Mugwump
Flycatch: The racial flycatch emote feeds them a little in swamps
Froglike: Lets them hop a little faster when toadcursed
StickyFeet: slightly harder to disarm

I've suggested this... twice so I'm behind it.

it's nice, I think changelings should get either the choice of a single racial set where the powers are only useable when you are in that form. I would really like to see some skills to do with the shard and the lessons talking about fanning it.

Grouphug: grouphug regenerate willpower and endurance wub.gif

Alger and I were always saying aslaran should have a skill just like what they now gave to bards, called Falling.

Like the idea. I think it would make things interesting to have something of the sort, and your idea's are very good.

Edit:

Lost track of what I was saying...
