The difference I've noticed between online friends and nearby friends isn't what they'd do in an emergency, above and beyond the call of duty. Good friends in either place will help you if they can. More distant friends will be more hesitant. It's more of availability. You can't casually go to the movies with someone who lives 1490.4 miles away. You can talk constantly with people who you know through a very multi-purpose medium, though.
