Burnout and the Arena

I know this has been mentioned before, but could we please, please, please, please not have burnout carryover from the arena? Specifically psionic, but I assume healing burnout isn't cured either.
Please? sad.gif

Seconded.
Shorlen2006-12-02 22:23:32
The way it should work is that going into the arena should save your burnout status (burned out or not burned out), and when you come out of the arena, it should load the saved state from before you entered.

Just making burnout cured on arena exit turns the arena into a way to cure burnout, which it shouldn't be.

Meh, that's pretty much what I meant. It does this for envenomed weapons already.
Ildaudid2006-12-04 22:44:49
Should envoy it Forren, waste a slot and envoy it kiss.gif

It can NOT do it for defences though, that has already been said. So, I don't know if it's possible or not. Just because it works for envenomed weapons doesn't mean this is coded similarly.

I thought the reason they gave for it not working for defenses wasn't so much that it couldn't be done, but that it was prohibitively memory intensive. I only vaguely remember that discussion, so it's entirely likely I'm wrong.

The hack-ish way to do it would be to just create two new venoms called Burnout and Not_Burnout. Generate a shortsword for each player entering an arena and envenom it according to whether or not the player is burned out. Once leaving the arena, take their shortsword and assign status according to the venom.

Granted, I'm not familiar with the specifics of the code involved, so that may or may not be feasible, and I somehow doubt Roark is into patchy programming, but something like that could be done.

I'm going to go track those discussions, so I might edit this if it makes me sound horribly bitchy. Which isn't the tone this should be read with.

Edit: I found it here, and basically the reason it couldn't be done has to do with the way defenses are stored, and the complexity of some of them. So it should be fairly simple to get a boolean value assigned to a character in the arena. Granted, again, I'm not familiar with Rapture in the least, so it's entirely possible that there are complications of which I'm unaware. I'm just saying that in theory it should be fairly simple, especially compared to defenses.

Bump.

Would have babies with whomever fixes this.
Reiha2007-02-22 19:59:58
I would like to see Charune or Morgfyre fix this then smile.gif
Unknown2007-02-22 20:10:46
I will totally have Morgfyre's children. I imagine he has a lot of them.

Edit: And Charune-sex sounds rather kinky...

Well, knowing Morgfyre, he would have children the Cronus way.

And to think I thought you were one of the sane people of the forums. sad.gif

Awww, now I feel all warm and fuzzy. I never knew people thought of me at all.

Babies for burnout?
Sylphas2007-02-23 00:33:29
I'm still not sure why it's memory intensive, since it can check afflictions and defenses every time you perform an action, and a simple list of them would appear to be trivially easy. I'm not quite sure why it isn't, and can't really think of why they can, for example, check paralysis whenever you swing your sword but not copy that bit when you enter the arena.
Shamarah2007-02-23 00:50:28
I'm still not sure why people who've never seen the code for Lusternia try to make assumptions about how easy or hard something would be to program in.

You can make some assumptions based on general programming experience. That's like saying "I'm not sure why construction companies try to make assumptions about how much a bridge will cost even before they've built it." It's true, there might be something different about Rapture or the way that they're stored that would make this more complicated, but programming languages and practices have quite a bit in common, so it's safe to make some assumptions about how difficult things might be to accomplished, based on how difficult they would be in another langauge or situation we know more about.
Unknown2007-02-23 02:43:15
Plus, in this particular instance, he wasn't even making assumptions. It was more of a vocalized train of thought and a statement that he didn't understand why it would be difficult. Not understanding why something is difficult is different from assuming that it isn't.

I just recently sparred Reiha, used Mindburst a bit too early, and got the effin psionic burnout. I agree with requiem, this thing shouldn't carry from the arena, it just affects normal life too much.
Unknown2007-02-23 22:57:09
Isn't there an artifact that reduces burnout now... ...or did I dream that up?
Callus2007-02-24 12:48:50
Even if there is such an artifact, the point of the discussion is not reducing or changing the -effects- of psionic burnout, just making sure that arena battles and the 'real world' are separate, as should be.
