This almost seems too trivial a question for the forums, but I just wanted to get a little clarification, please. Are demesnes allowed in Arena spars?

Thanks very much in advance!

Yes they are!

Magnagora has a silly rule in FFAs about Mages only being allowed to demesne one room. But in spars, do what you like. The Guild will be needing your demesne know-how soon enough, so get used to it. tongue.gif

You can't be serious. Only one room? What could that possibly be accomplishing?

It's a bloody silly rule.
Torak2006-12-05 20:44:03
Most likely because if the mage demenses the whole thing they can run around alot easier with no real actual risk of dying. Makes sense to me.
Anarias2006-12-05 21:08:19
No real actual risk of dying? That's silly.

If a rule is needed, how about "Don't be a censor.gif and enemy everyone in the arena"?

Limiting a demesne to one room doesn't help anyone since it gives no real experience for how fighting in a demesne would be like for the non-mage and it limits what options are available to the mage.

Edit - And furthermore! If you limit mages to one room demesnes it teaches them to sit there and do nothing if they can't leave the room. It doesn't help them learn how to manage their own demesne while breaking another persons during battle and it doesn't help them learn how to create a solid demesne in the first place. Grah, there are so many holes in the logic behind that rule.
Torak2006-12-05 21:21:00
No competent mage should die in their demense. It is easy to tumble and run meanwhile your effects hit the other person. I didn't make the rule either. I think if anything it should be a 5 room demense. Not to mention generally speaking two mages shouldn't bother fighting each other in the first place as it tends to make things incredibly boring. I am talking about spars, not wargames and not freeforalls.

And yet it happens all the time, theory being much different then application.

Why? The contention is the rule about demesnes in freeforalls.

Everyone knows that the Magnagora coliseum was made specifically with warriors in mind. Charge FTW!

Its hard to charge and tackle people out of their demense if its more than one room you know!
Torak2006-12-05 22:33:27
Any mage who doesn't want to die, simply put will not. It is a ton easier to escape as a mage then any other class(aside from guardians), ask any of them? The only time a mage will die in his demense is if he wants to play fair or doesn't really care. When you have currents, rubble, and all those passive hindering effects the chances of someone catching you are slim to none. The same can't be said for warriors, wicca, bards or anyone else without a 20 room area to play around in.

Except without tumble rolleyes.gif

Get back under your bridge, troll.

It's true, more for Druids than anything else, but if I didn't want to be caught in my demesne, nobody could touch me. The only times I died where when I got lost out of my demesne and caught in someone elses while trying to get back, or when I tried to go on the reckless offensive. Treelife for druids=uncatchable, but for mages just the hindering of demesnes make it pretty much impossible to stay as mobile as the mage, which equates to easy escapes.... Have you ever tried to run down a mage in their demesne? It sucks! Dieee Forren!
Torak2006-12-07 18:57:16
Not to mention stoneflesh and bubble. The abilities to hinder the other person are amazing, people just refuse to accept it.

They're amazing skills, yeah.

I just wish IRE would have at least one game with no classes that are dependant on some stupid skillset that makes them only viable if they are fighting in some area tuned to them.

i.e
Vibes, Rites, Groves, Demesnes, and whatever the druids use.

Is it too much to ask just one game without a variation of 'groves' or 'vibes'?

/edit

not so much rites

Its true.
I menaged to suvuve few minutes against Ixion on water some time ago when he still was Seren.
I had no system except for sipping health/mana/bromides. No wounds curing or stances, parry or rebounding.
We have been in my demesne he had protection up, not all was hitting him, but it was new for me and i didnt had alias for dissolving his protection and i didnt know a syntax. So i was just running around, reporting his presence and all that. So he was hitting me for few minutes with pinlegging and my writhing, focusing body manually. Great help was my demesne healing me, if i could get rid of his protection it could be even easier.

But few minutes later when he cought me on Celestia without my demesne i was dead in few seconds.
