"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I'm from Cincinnati (city in southern Ohio) so it's right.

I love this... compare to the first page which says "I bet you think you don't have an accent, well everybody does!"

Makes sense, since I'm perfectly fluent in both french and english. And I'm Canadian, guess I wouldn't have an Americain accent :/

In the context of this quiz, wouldn't 'no accent' mean you have a perfectly natural American accent that doesn't have any regional influences? Because if so, I feel slightly better about getting some kind of different result to 'pure' American accent.

No such thing.

especially if you look at the migration of people to America. The "normal" accents, should be something like the New York accent, or the accent American Latinos have.

I'd say there's such a thing. Compare me to a midwesterner and a southerner, and the difference would be clear. National newscasters tend to have a "neutral American accent." There's not really a great way to describe how it sounds (words fail like that), but you'd hear it.

And I'm not at all surprised that most of the Brits are scoring Boston or northeast. We have a lot of similar pronunciations, but you'd never confuse a Brit and a Bostonian! smile.gif

I'm counting "normal" by population numbers, not geography.
Sylphas2006-12-11 07:35:16
Normal is whatever is presented by the national media. Influence trumps population. Same thing happened with spelling when printing became widespread. Even if 2/3 of the country had a southern accent, if every major television network ran news and shows that only presented a New York accent, most people would consider that the norm.

Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

lol k?
Okin2006-12-11 13:15:45
Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

Wha? I'm Australian! Weird.

Also, what is this about "no accent"? All of you definitely have accents. That one that you think isn't an accent, the one in all the movies and from all the newsreaders? We can hear it. It's an accent.

Your Result: Philadelphia

Your accent is as Philadelphian as a cheesesteak! If you're not from Philadelphia, then you're from someplace near there like south Jersey, Baltimore, or Wilmington. if you've ever journeyed to some far off place where people don't know that Philly has an accent, someone may have thought you talked a little weird even though they didn't have a clue what accent it was they heard.

Utterly wrong. My accent is wholly british.

Perhaps the quiz would have a better shot at placing you as British if uh, it wasn't a quiz about what AMERICAN accent you have. BAD QUIZ! BAD!

I am, however, American.

It said I'm from the Northeast.

I think of cowboys when I think of "the West." Jake Gyllenhaal wrangling that other guy with his poetic, "I ain't no censor.gif, either!"

I'm from the tippy-top of Northern New York, where scores of people from NYC are sincerely astounded when I tell them that people really do live that far north without being in Canada.

Very innacurate for me...I've got a distinctive accent (when DJing everyone knew immediately I had grown up Texas style) yet gave me the whole "You don't have an accent" answer. (IE Midland)

Meh. Oh well, with 13 questions, can't expect it to be perfect smile.gif

Linguistically speaking, the 'no-accent' of the American Midland and south-central Canada has the least inflection. That's why they refer to as 'no accent'.
Shamarah2006-12-24 23:39:16
Lousy quiz. I don't have a Midland accent, I'm from Jersey unsure.gif
