I think the basic question we're arguing over here is just what hte purpose of a Mentor should be.
- Should a mentor be limited to giving advice and a little help now and then? If so, how do they differ from any other older player that wants to help? What is the purpose of having a mentor, other than the free credits for the mentor?
- Should a mentor have some greater bond and special abilities to help them help their protege? If so, how do you limit those abilities so they can be used ONLY to help needy proteges? Also, are these abilities really needed with guides around?
I would go with #2, and say that yes, mentors should have more abilities to help them help their proteges. If they exist only for advice-giving, then the mentor program really isn't needed at all - novices have a whole guild to give them advice. And, I have seen instances where there are no guides around when they were needed. And to Ferlas, I don't believe guides can actually be hidden in the same way divine can - it would kind of defeat the purpose of a guide if nobody could tell they were around. I might be mistaken, but my understanding is that if you don't see any guides on WHO, then there aren't any around.
Yep your mistaken just because you can't see guides on who dosn't mean that no guides are around. I just don't see the point in giving the mentors god/guide like powers really.

Hmm...I'll have to check with someone who's a guide who can verify this. That seems to go against the whole purpose of having guides.
Anyway, what purpose do you think mentors should serve? It seems like right now they can't do anything that couldn't be done by any other older guild mate. Why don't we remove mentors completely?

it seems reasonable enough that if players are guides then there would be enough to be around all the time (based off the requested information when the Moirae look for new ones), and that guides would be there incase they were needed for certain reasons.
I also think that mentors right now are really pointless except for those who don't want to buy credits and can find the novices who are going to. It would be nice if they could have a few special abilities, pulling them out of danger, perhaps being able to travel to their corpse if they are under a certain level and not in enemy territory(for either) (handy for those who can't be ressed for whatever reason and need a immolate).
Perhaps some things that only work while they are officially a novice, hesitant to suggest but perhaps faster learning (not less lessons required)

You are basically right mentors can do anything an older guild mate can, just the whole mentor thing is ment to encourage the actual mentor to pay more attention to that paticular pupil. I mean there is no reason why this has to be hard coded and could be done guild wise like The Squire of Ekard and such and such, if you know what I mean. I know when I mentored someone, the one and only time I did, I spent more time, trying anyway, helping them out and trying to see them more than I did others but as I said I could have done that without a hard coded mechanic.
