I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how these posts can be written by an English major. sad.gif

Someone who doesn't speak English as a first language? Sure, perfectly understandable, we've experienced it in the past and will in the future. Not a problem.

But if it's your first language AND you study it to such a degree..? I just don't get it. sad.gif

It would be a lot easier to respond to the idea if deciphering wasn't necessary. I'd like to respond, because from what I've been able to determine, your points aren't entirely correct... but I have trouble making out enough of it to even be sure that those ARE your points.

Ok, first off... someone who's english is their second language would not make the same type of errors that a native speaker would make. Especially when the medium of writing is the keyboard, where common practice and habbit of often type words can happen faster than they think or write.

I should have left this paragraph without my mid typing edits. just so you could see what I mean.

Second, English majors are people who read literature and write about the literature, not people who study and practice good spelling and grammer... completely different.

This pargraph has zeor su b edits by my seflt aI am not looking at the scen at all and just typing based on how mny figeigners offten work... You will see tons aof typs, wne ahwen I type extra fast you see event more of them as I get angry and post without thinking abmuch about hwat I writ!!!! (previous post was written with my eyes closed so I wouldn't do my mid typing edits... and even then I hit the backspace a few times because I knew of mistakes I made!)

Just for the sake of my curiosity, I am writing this post with my eyes completely closed. There will be no re-typing or editing afterwards. What you see is what I typed, though I did backspace when I made an error that I could *feel* was wrong. Now then.

If you study English, reading the books and literature (I'd delete and rephrase that if my eyes were open, as they're the same thing), you'd kind of HAVE to pick up a few things about grammar and spelling. Further, you wouldn't say "I know all about those things because I'm an English major, I just don't use them on the internat. Hah!"

There are those with English as a second language who do very, very well and make few mistakes because they're trying so hard to get it right. There are also those who aren't trying so hard to get it right, and a lot of mistakes do abound, As I said, those ones are understandable-- after all, it is a second language.

Anyways, this post would be a bit more coherent and have a better point if I was able to do the whole thing instead of just going word by word, but let's see how it looks.

Your fingers are less pudgy than mine! no fair tongue.gif Although I'm also curious if you were typing as fast as possible, or as fast as you were thinking.

Next post.

Anyways, I see two major errors in there-- a , that should have been a ., and an internat which should be internet.

Still, I feel that that is a sufficient counter-example to your own.

I always type as fast as possible. smile.gif Hence why I couldn't go back and count the letters since a certain point, when I knew I made a wording mistake and wanted to go back to modify.

Ok, I wasn't sure what you ment by "just going word by word"
Tzekelkan2006-12-25 22:54:45
Well, here goes Tzek! I will be writing this post with my eyes closed as well, because I've already tried it once and it seemed to have worked nicely. biggrin.gif

Anyways, English is a second language for me as well. A;tjough I have no natural affinity to learn a language, I have always loved English and O've always adored to read, write and speak in English more than my mother tongue. O'm completely new to text-games, Lusternia being my first, but my love for the English language is what kept me in-game.

I learned English off Cartoon Netwwork when I was a kid... but now they've changed it, it's no longer in English. sad.gif

Also, Lusternia and its forums have improved my written English a whole lot - both my vocabulary and expression jabe increased greatly, and I have all you smart people around here to thank for that. tongue.gif

Now, hopefully my oost will not be horribly full of errors...

EDIT: Five typos, not bad... all because I hit an adjacent key.
Unknown2006-12-25 23:11:11
Hey! My experience is so similiar to Tzekelkan's - started by watching Cartoon Network, but it's no longer in English in my country.

And yes, it's (this post) being written with my eyes closed.

Wow, no typos. Damn, I'm good.

Well, this is kinda offtopic, but I guess the original rant-idea has been rebutted already.
Shamarah2006-12-25 23:59:11
I'm also writing this post with my eyes closed! I'm a native English speaker and I can often tell when I made errors by lookiwithout looking at the screen, so I don't hink this post shtould have toom any typos in it. I'm going fast though with my typing so I'm not really sure. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.
Shiri2006-12-26 02:31:39
I gotta try this as well. Hmm, I don't have much of anything productive to say though...something something something. The quick black fox jumped over the lazy fish. Merry xmas.

Eh, looks right to me.

Thank you for your post, Emmy. We certainly appreciate any and all constructive feedback about our events, and time that we spend helping out Lusternia to the best of our abilities. Please also remember that the administration does what it can, when it can, to help the majority of the players have a unique and fun experience while playing this game. While we distincly understand the problems associated with being inadequate at bashing or PK combat, it does not preclude any and all activities. If you have suggestions, feel free to make them in a constructive way.

For reference, saying something is bad please change it, is not being constructive at all.

Then again, I think this point has been covered by the prior individuals posting in this thread and if there are further concerns, feel free to PM me regarding them.

And for reference, I type 90 words per minute, give or take, and did this entire post while watching CSI. (Who does it with their eyes closed? I'd rather watch something else that's entertaining me than just to close my eyes....)
Shiri2006-12-26 03:24:10
When work starts up again I'm going on a video to be shown at some conferences about autistic people and employment opportunities since apparently most of the people in the industry they're aiming at it would be amazed by a decently fast typing speed(~110-120WPM) dry.gif

Practical criticism, Daganev. What is quoted above is completely wrong.
Volgrant2006-12-26 15:57:16
Despite her attitude, Emmy still has a point IMO. You get a lot of privileges and respect if you're a good fighter. In fact, it is the absolute fastest way to gain respect and prestige. In some respects it's the only way to gain prestige. The only people I know outside of my org are primarily fighters and city/guild leaders (most leaders are also fighters). People with poor RP usually gets away if he/she is a good combatant. This game revolves around combat, and there is no denying that. The only person I know who've successfully managed to RP and maintain good interaction with the rest of the basin is Tully.
Saran2006-12-26 17:18:26
It would be interesting to see an event where rping was the primary focus and combat was either not an option or heavily downplayed.

note: i wrote this entire message using my wii and it only took ten minutes *sniffle* couldn't find a way to login to lusternia though

Really? Its "completely" wrong?

I think not.

If you want to study spelling and grammar you major in Linguistics.

The English Major list of classes at Harvard:

Linguistics

Daganev, I have a Delete from Deleted University, England. I graduated in June. I "majored" in English. You can google what you sodding like, but I stand by my point. Which happens to be correct.

Edit: In retrospect, I'm not happy with these details being public domain
Daganev2006-12-26 17:43:05
All you said is that I am "completely wrong" .... which is false.

Which is complete B.S.

Even on the Cambridge website, the "English" Major is devoted to literature ancient and modern, and not to the details of spelling and grammar. However the "Linguistics" major, is all about languages, how they are formed, and what defines them. I.e. spelling and grammar.

Sorry for the bad pun.

I may be incorrect according to England, or maybe just to the University of Deletetington But I am correct when it comes to the U.S. Standard system of Majors.

so sod off.

Oh right, Daganev. So you can read through a poem and understand its nuances and ambiguities without the faintest conception of grammar? Bollocks. Any English degree which doesn't require good linguistic understanding isn't worth doing.

Edit: On that website, Dag.. you'll see that throughout all the three years a compulsory course is 'Practical Criticism' - this involves the close reading and interpretation of small passages of literature without reference to context. It requires a more than basic understanding of grammar... furthermore, this course, in different incarnations can be found in the vast majority of English degrees - you simply can't do the subject unless you can take a small snippet of text and competently squeeze all its juices out.

I think he means specialty, not basic ability.
