What bards need is the ability to afflict. An ability like hexes or some weird mix like that. And in some things, if you have your PvP better than what it could be.
I've found in my own PvP battles that if I am fighting a knight, with pureblade or axelord, I will have the upper hand, except for the cleave ability. That is my primary concern, because AVOID works like a shield, and it's bypassed with CLEAVE. Egh...
As for guardians, That is when you will actually realize how much you suck in PvP. When you are being afflicted by ten-twenty different things, even if you have a good combat system, with the current abilities you will be hard pressed to kill the target.
My personal technique is to imbue the room with an Octave, BLANKNOTE the target, princess farewell, MINORSEVENTH, and in 3-4 hits the target is dead. I'm right now 83% to maestro, and I found that without any resistances on the target, I've reached 1120 damage per hit (with MINORSEVENTH). If I need to afflict, it is usually limited to breaking limbs with forwardflip, or taking away the constitution, or shredding the defenses with Highmagic. The chances that the vials will be destroyed, isn't sufficient enough. We need something that actually AFFLICTS in Starhymn, with not chance involved.
Illusions is quite handy for defensive abilities, and I would love to see some of it's abilities given to certain ranking members of society. Imagine, setting up posters on the walls on doing this or that. Not just for illusions. And tarot is useful, beyond useful for bards, but still I would like to see something like Hexes for City bards. Or something that can afflict.
As with the dodging, when you hit gifted, you will be dodging about 76, 77% of attacks if you handstand, 44-46% if you are normally standing, and if you have the AVOID ability, you can dodge every single attack if you have a fast enough equilibrium.

Not sure what you're talking about, regarding guardians. If anything guardians have more trouble with bards, as long as they have decent acrobatics. Guardians rely on afflictions and especially certain afflictions, so when you're dodging a lot of them, they have a hard time getting what they want. And with geomancers and nihilists, cacophony have hunger, which they are both vulnerable to.
Can you elaborate on how tarot is beyond useful for bards?
I'm not sure what you mean by dodge every single attack, because that depends on who you're fighting. Also, avoid works off balance, not equilibrium. It takes 250 endurance and willpower for every use, so you can't use it indefinitely.

I know this is slightly off topic, but since we're talking about bards...
I'm a pretty new player (my char is only 17 at the mo). However, I do have one question:
If I wear great robes (because I love influencing), does that mean my dodging through acrobatics is out the window? I'm not high enough in Acrobatics to tell much difference, but hopefully eventually I will be and I want to avoid the issue before I reach it.

I do not believe robes affect your dodging, but I'm not precisely sure.

Though I've never really tested this out as I just trust the help file, but if anyone wants to try?

You may not wear any armour beyond leather in order to dodge.

Greatrobes have less prestige than clothing, from what I remember. I fact, I remember then offering close to 0 presige, just like armor. Are you certain that they are adding to your prestige?

Shorlen: I'm opulent without greatrobes, royalty with. I could be on the brink without them though, so I'm not sure.
Robes definitely affect dodging, at least pve. After some quick tests:
40-50% of hits dodged from krokani with greatrobes, with roughly 17% damage reduced from dodged hits. That's with trans acrobatics and 16 dex. I'm also pretty sure what you're fighting affects how much you dodge.
This was not conclusive testing by any means, just a quick thing to get some ballpark figures.
If someone wants to test with leather armor, that would be good.

i'm kind of curious what the designers+coders of bards have in terms of suggestions for combat with them. Perhaps everyone is just missing something.
Yrael2007-05-15 14:09:11
..that, or we could just use pop lyrics in composition.
Baby hit me one more time will have everyone wanting to die, deaf or no! Who needs an instakill?
