Discuss != Q&A

(I need help with ..... syntax
here this is what you do to make that syntax work .....
oh does ..... work as well as ....
why yes it does but not like that it works like..... so you just look at the green bar at the side of nexus and that does it for you)=discussion that could take place on newbie.
Arguing the difference betweem q&a and discussion=arguing pointless semantics.
So whats your point? The newbie channel is still an area for any ooc discussion or Q&A which will help the newbies out.

And before anyone says "That should be taken to Tells" let me repeat something many of my teachers, including college professors have said to my classmates and I in class: Ask questions where the group can hear the answer, because if you have the question there's a good chance someone else is wondering too and they might not be brave enough to ask.
So giving answers via Tells doesn't help the people who were confused by the same thing but were too bashful to ask. Or for that matter, hadn't thought of question YET and still got to learn something by listening to someone else's question and answer.

Err... actually, not entirely. It's meant for quick syntax questions, things about Nexus... and that's generally the extent of Newbie's OOCness. Beyond that, we try to encourage it to be as IC as possible, answering questions about the Finks, Gnomes, Newton, and so on. If there's a more detailed OOC question, as Aiakon stated, it tends to go into tells pretty much immediately. That way it's not bothering other newbies, the one with the question gets more personal attention, and it keeps Newbie generally clear of clutter so other newbies can ask their questions.
Newbie isn't patrolled as zealously as other channels because it IS meant to have a bit of OOC stuff on it, and it's not meant to be a chat aether. It's meant to be a place to ask game-related questions, and encouraging newbies to act somewhat IC (ie, not "insane") on it does make their transition to the "Real Game" easier.
However, there shouldn't be people yelling at newbies to be IC on the newbie channel. If they're asking a TON of OOC stuff on the newbie channel and there aren't guides around... take their questions to tells. Answer them privately. Don't yell at them, or they'll be rather upset, if they're genuinely new.

I think that argument loses a great deal of value when one remembers that all our novices to not join up at absolutely the same time, or play at the same time - they are staggered.

How about, you make it so you can only understand OOC if you are currently speaking OOC, or even CONFIG OOC ON/OFF, which lets you listen to OOC tells/says when on, and doesn't give you any OOC thing if off. And, for novices, it can start off ON, so you can easily explain things to them.
Granted, I have no problem using tell XXXX ((OOC: bleh)), but this is easier to do if you are speaking to multiple people.

You could make triggers that do this fairly easy.

1. Make Newbie an OOC channel officially.
2. Inform everyone that if they don't like it that they can TURN IT OFF.

As far as I know, Newbie is OOC. In actuality, it's more of a mix of OOC and IC since the newbies have to start learning the basics of being in character. What's really annoying is when people yell at newbies for being OOC on Newbie (usually it's others newbies yelling though).
