The guy who hates evil corporations and pushes free software? Maybe I wasn't seeing the same side of him you were, but he's never struck me as remotely right-leaning.

Oh, I've never seen him as right-leaning.. but I'm sure he was closer to the centre.

Getting this back on topic.

Maybe it won't be a "chat". Maybe a metaverse type of thing where the players walk around in an OOC or mixed IC-OOC form.

(Although Matt hates Second Life, so I dunno how he'd feel about something like that).

I do not believe that the between-game "metamarket" that is being suggested involves gold-to-credit exchanges. Rather, it should only involve an official method of transferring credits between a single player's characters in one realm. This will not lead to a market crash if properly implemented. I believe that the best way to implement this so that the true intention of the system (transferring OOCly-obtained credits between characters on one account) is adhered to would be to have a pool of OOC credits that could be transferred between characters on the same account. You would get these for Bardic contests, buying OOC credits, and other such activities. Credits bought in-game or transferred from one player to another are put in an IC credit pool. When converting credits into bound credits, buying artifacts, or selling credits, the IC pool will be used first to prevent people from accidentially using the OOC credits they were planning on transferring.

Also, about time they got around to doing this. Was wondering if it was going to happen when the latest beta started and I noticed all 4 games were running on a single server.

That's kind of like hating the JPEG format. I wonder if he does because of some technical consideration about it, or because he saw an ugly JPEG once?

We don't know they were all the same server--port redirection can happen on a firewall to different boxes.

Although with "virtual machines" becoming all the rage now, who knows...

Gwylifar, I think Matt dislikes SL not based on the concept, but because of the foolishness of their press releases and their marketing puffery. Everybody's in the mainstream media's treating them as the "WoW for Grownups", when they don't really have that many active users.
Shamarah2007-01-12 20:10:02
I think it would be cool if they allowed credit transfers, but you should ONLY be able to transfer bound credits (or they should bind automatically on transferring). Then they wouldn't be able to wreck the credit economy.

About the chat room and forums and censoring...

When have they ever censored something because "they didn't like what they were saying"?

the only thing that is censored is Personal attacks, bugs, and foul language. Content has nothing to do with it.

Somebody at Second Life is blackmailing someone at the AP I think. I never heard of Second Life save on the News. I think thats the first time I learned about something on the internet from a non internet source.
Gwylifar2007-01-12 20:15:55
I think the "problem" there is Reuters, then. They're the media outlet that's gotten obsessive about SecondLife. It's a typical case of trying to back the "next big thing" before it's big. However, Reuters sure isn't calling it "WoW for grownups" -- nobody who's even visited its webpage could mistake it for a game.

Reuters this time, not AP? my bad.

But it figures, Reuters is also the same company that has tons of fake Photoshoped photos from war situations.

A meta-credit market would wreak havoc with all 4 economies. They all have different average credit prices, they all have dfferent econoies anyway, they all have different ways of making gold, etc. For example, it's far easier to make gold as a young Lusternian Celestian than it is as an Imperian Kinsarmarian.

Whereas higher-level Celestians... *mutter* hate...hunting...laws...

Duh. It will likely only let you transfer BOUND credits.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what Ytraelux is implying, but what does that change?
Karnagan2007-01-13 03:30:56
Bound credits? That's been something Matt's been against for ever since Bound Credits were introduced. He'd go spare if he heard someone permitted someone to trade them. I don't think he'd ever want that... there must be something we're missing. Otherwise, people could basically transfer tons of credits from their Achaean characters to some other player and absolutely destroy IRE's credit margins.

He hates SL because Linden got an awesome scam he didn't think of first.

About my political leaning: I dunno. I try not to orient myself according to the proverbial political spectrum, so I'm confusing to pin down politically. There's no "explain exactly what you think of each and every political issue, ever" thread on the forums (Or I missed it), so I'll keep them to myself.

About the IRC chat room, in my experience there's a lot more negativity and frustration flying around the forums at any given moment than in IRC. Interestingly enough, everyone on IRC generally likes and respects each other, even if we do jump at one another's throats occasionally. I can't say the same about the forums, which paint a pretty ugly picture of the playerbase at times.

That has nothing to do with why I object to his behavior (or the enablers who let him do that). It's a question of professional ethics.

(I don't hate the guy personally. Matt probably told him about the XMas card as well--sent cards to all gods of Lusternia, past and present. I appreciate all he did in the past. It's the actions.)

You're comparing apples to dump trucks. And the reason he doesn't like it is the same reason everyone would call BS on IRE if we quoted that we had as many players as people that played for five minutes, we'd have overly inflated statistics. Plus other reasons, which can be found here.

Enough with the scam thing. It's called a payment method. Some games charge you per month. I hate bills. Some games used to charge you by the -hour-. In the real world, when people don't like something (say, the price of gas at one station, or the way your health insurance works) they ditch it, they don't hang around the gas station, or call customer service, and whine constantly.

Anyway. What I want, and have always wanted, is a way to set up your ire-wide account, and then be on a sort of common room game, about the size of a village or city, with no skills, just chatting, etc. A great way to cross-promote, and just have some fun.
