Time on realitycheck is 2.5-2.7 seconds. Time on chop is 2.0-2.3 seconds. So, they're about equal.
Damage does effect the axe. 10 hits with a 196 damage axe for a 500 pound tree, 15 hits with a 110 damage axe. Speed doesn't seem to, but Hiri forgot to have timestamping on
(Note that "500 pound tree" means natural forest, and a sapling that's been growing for 5 IC years, so no whining about 10 hits being too much )
So whats wrong with one chop no matter what strength/axe stats taking down non forested saplings?

Even better, make it so that you can chop trees using your staff. Except it would have to look a bit different, with the end becoming coated in sharp stone or ice when you swing it.
OR for non-runists, allow us to attach an axe to our staff. (Or maybe runists too. Although that staff would probably get pretty heavy )

I'm preferring the idea of shattering a frozen/petrified tree. PETRIFY SAPLING/FREEZE SAPLING, SMASH SAPLING, two steps. Quick enough to be better than an axe, but not so much as to be destroying the utility of a sapling.

Druidic demesnes are so weak compared to mage ones (yes, I'm comparing demesnes alone - not even trying to add psionics into this) that I don't think this is an issue.

BT demesnes own me.

What about adding a new ability to Mage staffs? "TOUCH STAFF TO SAPLING"
For Aquamancers, the ground around the sapling turns to really liquidy mud and it falls over.
For Geomancers, the tree is petrified, and then crumbles.
And it could cost 1 power and/or a decent chunk of willpower? That way chopping would still be the cheaper option, but they'd have this available too?
Or more like STAFFPOKE SAPLING...
"As you ram the bottom of your staff through the surface of the ground, all nearby plantlife starts to wither and age at an immensely quickened pace."
Repeat process several times, add in a powercost and boom; rid of the neccesity of an Axe-Bearer to get rid of those pesky druid demesnes. And Daganev, sorry for the Nerfing, but listen to Cuber; Take the nerfbeating like a man! Or bear, in your IC-ish case...

Chop is faster than Realitycheck and saplings don't protect against druidic melds?
Sylphas2007-01-19 21:10:06
It's hard to defend saplings now that communes can terrain, and I don't like the thought of balancing it by letting mages demesne through illusions. Although I do hate arguments based on skills that require two people (wisp + druid always annoyed me because of that), it's true that now we have more ways to protect a demesne than the cityfolk.
The good news is, we'll probably lose terrain when bards get their illusions spec.

That really should be fixed. Druids shouldn't be able to instantly break each other, that would make for some really annoying fights.
EDIT: or maybe, with specializations, some illusions should be enchantable. Terrain illusion necklace FTW!
Sylphas2007-01-19 21:12:17
Saplings were originally to force Ethereal to be more commune v commune and rid us of city interference, weren't they? At least sort of?
Enchantable terraining still screws the cities. We can't give them Saproling Bags or something.
EDIT: Bah, I play too much Magic.

I don't agree that communes should terrain. I consider that an oversight that will be fixed once the Illusion specs come out.
