The thing I don't get, is how I hear hardcore Christians saying all the time that things test their faith, and they even welcome it sometimes, because it makes them stronger, but the second that you give them something religiously questionable, they cover up like a turtle goes into its shell. Or, sometimes worse, they do stupid things like this, to actually try to ban the book. Some people are entirely too closed-minded, the book isn't anti-Christian or anything like that, it's about the "the thought-destroying force" of censorship in the 1950s, the book-burnings in Nazi Germany starting in 1933, Stalin's suppression of authors and books in the Soviet Union, and the horrible consequences of an explosion of a nuclear weapon.
Tzekelkan2007-01-21 00:45:22
That is not irony. I would fully support the banning from the curriculum of a book that 'takes God's name in vain', 'downgrades Christians' and 'talks about our firemen'. I find it absurd for our world's youth to be exposed to such unorthodox reading that clearly advocates violent action be taken against age-old instruments of culture (e.g. books). Society can only be worsened by these blatant and unashamed attempts to destroy what little decency is left in our world - all books which contain scenes of 'drunk' and 'cigarettes' are the bane of traditional modern communities and need all be banned, or, alternatively, burnt.

Sad to see how people use religion as a shield against everything. I understand for some people it can really be something that helps go through bad periods in life, but this is absurd. I haven't read the book although at school my teacher talked about it when he was going over the list of books we could pick from for an essay. A shame people fail to see the true story behind this book which is something that should be told. Perhaps books should come with a paper explaining the background behind it just to calm the minds of those who fear it will be misunderstood and guide those who think it's all evil and bad?

In that case the stereotype is true, though. That man is acting precisely like a fundamentalist Christian character out of a South Park episode would act.

Should I go show a video of a black person stealing and then doing a gang shooting, and talk about how blacks are runing our society, and how stupid black people are that they rob and kill people? Perhaps we should take any news clip we see and apply it to all members of large groups!
Not a single piece of information about what other beliefs the people hold, or what other things they do. There have always been people who think the slightest bad word or off color scene in a book is reason not to teach it to people under the age of 18. Such people have existed since education in America started.
The comments linked to that video are hate speach at thier worse.

The comments in the above post are over reactionary at best.
And anyway, mine was based on personal experience, and I did say hardcore Christians, not your run of the mill variety.

Mine was humouristic in nature; I wasn't aiming at any specific group of people, just at the overzealous fatherly figure in the clip. It's people like him that make me sad.

Wait, you're talking about the comments on YouTube? I don't even read those, I value the integrity of my forebrain.
ETA:
If you mean the comments here, then select to read:
I'm sorry I hurt your overzealous, ridiculous sensibilities. Clearly, no group of people, ever, should be offended by assertions that it holds opinions which are harmful to society, because everyone is right, at the same time. And of course, when we criticize that one fundamentalist Christian nut, we're really vilifying ALL Christendom and by extension ALL religion, ever.
Tzekelkan2007-01-21 02:11:15
Also, everything said in the video is debatable.

Isn't that just a -tad- different though? The thief doesn't steal -because- he is black, nor 'gang shoot' as a product of his ethnicity. It's likely due to his upbringing or socioeconomic position.
Some nut complaining about some random nonsensical superstition they hold not being forced on everyone else though, that is a product of their religion. Thus I think it is fair to draw criticism on the religion itself that endorses this stupidity, since without that indoctrination the irrational and ridiculous behaviour would not be occuring.
I'm also really surprised the school actually formed a commitee in response to the complaint, and the the news report treated it seriously. That parents can cause such damage to their children's thinking is abominable, that it is accepted and perpetuated by society at large is much worse.

And strange people who have wierd notions about bad words in books don't do it because they are of any particular religious persuasion! It's likely due to his ubbringing or sociioepconmic postition. This is the biggotry I am talking about.
If you ever bothered to read the bible, you would know that its much worse than any book about Huck Fin, or anything in Fareigheit 451.
And I was commenting more on the title of the video and the YouTube commenters.
The Farenheit 451 book is a very pro Religion/Pro Bible book. Afterall, that is the book most commented on about being burned and outlawed in that fictional society.
The title of the youTube video should have been "Nut tries to ban book about book banning" the religious aspect is entirely surpufulous to the argument, as any critical reading of religious doctrine would show how wrong that person is from what I have been told about the teachings of Christianity.

By default, the people that comment on YouTube movies on the site are just as 'bad' and as 'stupid' as the view they are trying to mock and/or condemn. The overwhelmingly vast majority of them are just making noise - silly, really.
But of course, this is all debatable.

Except, he's using religion to support his claim - saying the book "takes the lord's name in vain" and complaining about the burning of a Bible in it. His opinions obviously stem, at least in part, from his religion, or he's using his religion to support it. He's not just any old nut, he's a Christian nut, and saying his religion is irrelevant to the discussion is clearly naïve and symptomatic of how religion is seen by some as a subject that should not be seen in any negative light, which is exactly what allows idiots like that guy to use it to shield themselves while being outrageously stupid. If he was using purely secular excuses for it, he would not be being taken seriously at all.

Its fairly obvious that A) You haven't even read the book to come to that conclusion and B ) You have no sense whatsoever of reality. If you think that hearing about smoking, or drinking in a book that is read in grade 10 is something morally objectional then I truly pity you because the fact is, most people in highschool are getting drunk by that point in time. It mirrors reality, simple as that. Not to mention it doesn't take the 'Lords name in vain" and the bible is actually read to the main character throughout the book(But hey, ignorance is a bliss). The fact is the book is about complete censorship, not just select books and it is a good method to get that message across. Destroying the little bit of decency left in this world? Then you must think any airing of news on TV is wrong and should be pulled, or any news in general because lets face it - none of that is about flowers and froliciling..which seems to be what you think we should be learning in highschool. I have actually read the book, yes for school and it was the single book that brought up the most debate in class and raised issues that we can actually relate to. What is worse is that these people are trying to do exactly what the book is about, censoring something because it may offend one group or another(For those of you who have read the book you will know what I am talking about). For those of you who don't, in the book it talks about the beginning of the end when it comes to censorship, no matter what the content one group or another will find it offending and raise and issue about it.
EDIT: Oh and as far as talking bad about firemen go, the firemen we know and those from the book have 0 similarities. They are bookburners, that is their job. It says nothing bad about current firemen whatsoever. Another case of flat out ignorance.
