Iosai:

EMLIST exists in EMOTIONLIST. EMSHOW... We'll see!

Ah but not quite...in Aet you can search the EMLIST. So for example EMLIST *nod* would show you all the variations on nodding.

EMSHOW shows you all the different ways an emote is seen - so 1st/2nd/3rd person targeted and untargeted and the pose if there is one.

Usually I am reticent about stealing things wantonly from other IREs but this is something I genuinely think should be in all of them.

Matching will work from the next reload. :)

Awesome, I've been wanting that for ages. :D

Eh, slightly off topic, but I'm always been bothered by NOD vs SIMPLENOD. A lot of people use NOD where it isn't appropriate at all, but it's just because it's the default NOD.

I agree with Cadfael too! We could use more laughs! Maybe even some racial specific ones -flutter-

I'd love to see a chitter-y sort of laugh/chuckle, but I've no idea how to write it - I just have how it sounds in my head.

Phoebus:

There are many different 'laugh' emotes besides the plain laugh! Why not play with them and find the one you think is best for your character?

Well, I wanna start by saying thanks for trying to be helpful! :D I just checked, however. There are five different laughs (other than chuckle - that's the only other one that comes to mind for me.) Of them, one has you stifling a laugh, another has you pointing and laughing, and another - hearty laugh - has you planting your fists against your waist and puffing out your chest. And that laugh is also characterized as deep. The only other option, other than the normal laugh, is "a shrill little laugh."

I really think super standard emotes like laugh and grin ought not to have descriptors attached to them that might potentially screw with people's RP. Not every dude is gonna have a laugh that is deep and rumbling. And I forget what the standard female laugh sounds like, but someone complained about that, too. Just "Cadfael laughs" would be fine with me. No need to get fancy.

Not all of the laughing emotes have laugh in their name. There's like, snicker, and gigglesnort, and giggle, and titter, and chuckle, and heh, and cackle, and those are just the ones that are coming to me off the top of my head. Basically, just type every gosh darn sort of laugh-type thing you can, and some of them are probably going to turn up as something. And if you still aren't happy with any of those you could always just EMOTE one that was perfect for you. Or, if what you had in mind wasn't super specialized and you think more people would want, suggest that as yet another type of laugh to have available. I just feel like there's already so much variety in the laughing emotes, that saying the plain LAUGH is inherently flawed doesn't really hold water.

What I'm saying is that plain laugh isn't plain laugh, and that there ought to in fact be a plain laugh, as anything else is bound to be somehow specific, and therefore potentially unsuited to someone's character or situation. I also frequently have trouble seeing what these descriptors add to emotes - mischievously is either implied in the context of a grin or it shouldn't be there at all. And honestly shouldn't it be the people who want specific emotes who are using EMOTE, not those who just want a standard verb? My problem with having to use a custom emote all the time for something so simple as laughing arises out of the fact that when a conversation is being had in transit, it can disrupt following, as well as other similar stuff. I guess LOL sorta works, though. It just seems to me like the more basic emotes ought to be more basic, so I thought I'd suggest it here.

Really though, who just laughs plainly? *gigglesnort*

(Last post I'll make on this topic, I promise.) I'm of the personal opinion that if someone doesn't like LAUGH, there's nothing forcing them to use it. It may be the "plain" emote, sure-- maybe someone new tries it first, and realizes it doesn't work with their character. But then they know it doesn't suit them, and there is absolutely nothing saying they have to use it ever again. I get where you're coming from, but I'm saying that it doesn't really make much sense if you think about it!

tl;dr: if you use an emote and you like it, use it. If you use an emote and you don't like it, don't use it.
Enyalida2012-06-02 03:01:16
I think that this problem would be solved by EMSHOW, and something to point new people towards it so that they can test if they do like LAUGH before they use it! /waggle

It's fun to be able to LOUNGE ON COUCH when furniture permits. Could we potentially just LOUNGE as an emote, too, for those of us who enjoy chillin' out like Hedonism Bot in as many situations as possible?
