Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking about doing a Geomancer novice. I know I'd need to trans the (3)? guild skills to start out. Are there more that are necessary in order to actually enjoy the game in terms of combat and bashing?

Good planar is important. Transing illusions isn't even slightly necessary.. and you can make do very satisfactorily with only mythical Geomancy.

Really tempted to make another character as a rouge and focus all in Aethercraft... problem is who's going to accept a fresh-out-of-the-portal character to be an aethercrew?
Ummm... Me? Actually, that's often the best time to recruit gunners.
I can invite established people over and over and over and find them consistently too busy, even if they've previously expressed an interest in coming along.
Training up novices has proved much more effective.

I'm guilty of this

A few random notes - don't take runes as a geo unless you really want to. In its current form, it's kinda more designed for druids, really. Just about everyone will recommend psionics, but if you decide to go with dreamweaving, stop at Narcolepsy (33% mythical or so), transing it is a silly waste of lessons in my eyes. Similarly with illusions, you don't need much past Terrain unless you're a telepath, Wounds if you are a telepath, and Stalker if you really want it. Basically, having only Virt skill is fine. The Illusions skillset isn't that powerful, but has some nice skills early on, like Terrain which is essentially necessary.
As someone else mentioned, Planar is a very nice skill to trans. Very, very nice. However, you don't get that much useful ness from any skills between master and mythical. Still worth it though for cosmicsense (lets you scry people on adjacent planes), Broadcast (lets you talk to people regardless of what plane you're on, excluding aetherspace and aetherbubbles), Nexus (lets you use any nexus to transverse. Necessary for communes, not so necessary for cities), and Conglutinate (the trans skill, autorevives you at your nexus with absurdly minimal experience loss if you die on any plane besides prime. Simply amazing).
I don't know how much into the pvp you want to get, but as a geo, you'd need: Chop in Environment (gifted 50%) to deal with druids, Shieldparry in Combat (gifted 0%) to deal with warriors, Thirdeye in Discernment (master 0%) to deal with shrouded people (no herb for it here).
I'm not sure if you need Illusions in Discernment to deal with other magi, you may be able to just use dispell in illusions for that, but I don't know how much illusions skill differences between you and the illusioner matter for dispelling.
Oh, and FocusMind in Discipline (fabled 0%) is just really nice in general - it's the same as the trans survival skill Focus in Achaea.
If you're not going hardcore into PvP, you really just need diag in discernment (or thirdeye/potionlist if you really want it), teleport in planar (adept), geomancy to staff, illusions to illusion, and your tertiary guildskill to... whatever the heck you want. Dreamweave control, telekinesis to forcefield, or telepathy to... whatever.
