Damn forums.

Me and Lowe were having a chat on IRC about what the bard guilds' guards could be, and we came up with some ideas.

We thought that some kind of instrument that is set down in a location, and has a selection of two or three effects from that guild's music spec that it could play as attacks.

Here were our ideas for the instruments, somebody more familiar with the appropriate skillsets will have to suggest songs they could play.
Cacophony: Somethings blaring, like trumpets or horns.
Cantors: A harp, and yes, I am stereotyping what instrument an angel might use.
Harbingers: Drums, because their skillset is all about beat and rhythm.
Spiritsingers: Pipes or wind chimes, because they sound kind of lilting, foresty and spirity. Lowe suggested Selenelullaby and Whitehorn, and Minorsixth, although it that case we should have Minorsixth for all four bard guard types.

Discuss.

I was thinking more the guards use Acrobatics, like highjump, forwardflip, and maybe juggle balls that do random poison afflicts like charybdon.

So something like this:

"Many small wooden wind flutes are stretched out on lines here, their music blossoming richly as it is absorbed into the surrounding plant life."

"A gem bedazzled golden harp is here, oddly plucking out a tune of it's own accord, it's blindingly bright luminescence rising and falling as each new note is released."

"A coarse spiral bone horn is stabbed halfway into the dirt here, it's fierce voice making the very ground vibrate to it's tune."

"An enormous set of hide drums loom here, their visible beats tending dark arcs of energy spiraling frantically out from them into the quavering air."

I think it would be cool if they were like Druid/Mage guards in that you could only have one per room. They would have room attacks that would afflict all commune/city enemies every 10 seconds or so.

The other option, something I touched on many months ago, would be that they were almost invisible voices and since they had almost no mass they would be for air protection as they could fly, still being pseudo infused so they couldn't take damage and having only one a room.

Edit:If they were humanoid, on the ground and used highjump, that would be nifty too. pray.gif Please please please, elfen acrobatically enlightened bards for seren? The Serenguard hardly ever use their Rank1.

Oooh, I like that idea...

Oh god, did the forums eat all my instrument descriptions? crying.gif I knew I should have put them elsewhere, they took me awhile and I loved them.

No highjump, that would kill the possibility of flying over the guards to raid.

Lets not nerf raiding more than it already is please.

IIRC Estarra said they wouldn't put in brass/woodwind instruments because singing while blowing into an instrument makes no sense.

EDIT: Unless you mean the instrument plays itself. That'd be cool, I guess.

Yeah, I was thinking the instruments would play themselves. Or the wind blowing through them would.

What about something like this instead of actually having multiple guards, you have one large instrument, say a horn or something which is stuck at the nexus/obelisk in the village/city. A bard can then blow the horn, causing different effects which effect both guards and players, say, extra damage, faster attacks, take less damage, and vitality effect. The effects would only last as long as the bard is blowing the horn, so they would not be able to do anything else. Each instrument could have a unique org effect as well or have them all the same. It would probably cost around maybe 200 power or so to summon and would hve quite a bit of health, but couldn't actually do anything on it's own.

While nifty, the purpose of guards is to keep an area protected from all but the most intent, skilled, or prepared attackers. Something that requires a bard to operate, while fun and useful, isn't in-line with the rest of guards. I like the idea of magical instruments that play themselves, or baring that, humanoid acrobats. Your idea would have the same weakness as shrine powers or discretionary powers compared to guards, if someone isn't around, then it doesn’t help against raiders.

As for high jump completely wreaking flying, I don’t think so, at least if they could only have one per room. It also wouldn’t follow you around high jumping, ooh they’d be on a stage if they were acrobatic guards, that would be there reason for only 1per and not moving… Ooh I love that. frenzy.gif

It might work if the 'bard guard' was the one doing the blowing/beating/playing, and only one such could be summoned, or something.
Shiri2007-02-20 07:45:38
The highjumping one would be a great choice actually.

It would definitely look cool. All the afflictions you get from being kicked out of the sky, too... Oooh. Okay, it's not that many afflictions, but I was impressed when I first tried it, hehe.

If you put this "highjumping guard" at the entrance to the village it will wreck any possibility of flying to get inside the village. It's already impossible to fly into the mountain villages and if the people who put the guards up arnt stupid, its impossible to sprint past.

Besides Estarra already said she was thinking about a musicly imbued room and not mobiles.

Either or, I'm not picky.
