I'm afraid I am going to have to side with Aiakon here (ewww) and join the cello camp. Very few things beat Bach's Cello Suites.

I've got to agree with Verithrax on this one >_> Ok, I guess the world didn't end.

Anywho, I've been moved to tears by violinists who were just THAT good, I've heard some nice cello pieces, but nothing to compare.

To say that the instrument sounds like nails on a blackboard makes me want to turn green and smash things.

Violins are beautiful solo, depends on the piece, also fiddles (aka hillbilly violin) can be awesome too. I will look for some solo violin pieces.

I was an advanced violinist once.
