Constructs and Colossi

Now that there was the first aetherspace confrontation between aetherships (that I've seen), how are people viewing the overall nexus world conflict system?
Lysandus2007-03-21 01:04:03
Well, looks like bombarding is taking too long to recover. Then not to mention enemy turrets hit us fast and hard and that's it, over all it's nice (except kinda disappointing) way of battle.
Sipelus2007-03-21 01:21:19
Nah, the damage was fine if you ask me. Battle was lost since we didn't have a good empath and I was the only one shooting.
To the people who were on the Fang: did you have diamonuts on the turrets?

Edit: too bad we didn't get to finish the bombardment. For the amount of time it takes though, I hope it does some nasty damage!

I'm waiting to hear about a ram/raid assault on an enemy ship myself.
Catarin2007-03-21 01:31:38
Eh. Not too thrilled with it but being a pilot who is forced to just sit there and get shot at isn't really that much fun tongue.gif Aethercraft specializations are a bit of a luxury skill for the vast majority of people. But without specialized crew if you're facing even one skilled bombardier, you're kind of hosed.

So unless bombard takes the construct down by like half its health or something, right now it just doesn't seem worth the effort involved given the manpower required to keep the bombarding ship bombarding. Unless there is no resistance of course and you just want to get home faster.

Maybe I'm just tired. Maybe since specializations are more useful now, more people will train in them and it won't be a problem. We'll see how it goes.

Oh, some way to practice aether battles without killing everyone and losing all your power and flashpoints would really be helpful.
Karnagan2007-03-21 05:52:52
We weren't hitting you quite as hard as we could have, and you were facing an Empath who was building his ship healing literally on the fly. Increasingly, cities who want a serious shot at toppling a colossus will absolutely need a skilled aethercrew to avoid being blown to bits on the way in, or need to be facing a poor quality crew. Frankly, I like this way much better... I'd understand quite completely if it was our ship being blasted to its component atoms in that fight, especially given our Empath's mediocre healing job. But if that happened, you guys would basically have a raid group in our nexus world. Considering the power you stood to gain, it's a calculated risk.

As for a way to prevent ships from destroying themselves in practice rounds, I would suggest either opening hailing frequencies or using messages. smile.gif

So we won the first colossi battle and the first true aether battle?

Oh yeah!

==============================================
I'd like you hear your comments on the battle too!

It was fun, and a lot more indepth than first anticipated. The three specializations of aethercraft make it more dynamic. After analyzing the skillsets, it'll still be interesting to see how they end up working (on say a cost vs benefit ratio) amidst combat.
Ayridion2007-03-21 08:27:26
It wasn't the first battle over constructs - Celest attacked Magnagora's constructs a week and a bit ago, but it was the first aethership battle that I've seen during them.
Ixion2007-03-21 08:31:57
I mean I was in the first of each, not that the first happened today. Xanon and I vs celest was the first colossi one tongue.gif

When Celest gets their new construct type, I'd really like to test out bombardment and if leading a double fronted assault is worthwhile.

Edit: I think Commanders should be able to perhaps see the grid module damage, or assess at least the hull strength of the enemy ship. Empaths already have a huge responsibility, and communicating statuses constantly on the ship aether will likely result in a downgrade of efficiency.
Ayridion2007-03-21 08:33:25
Ah, I see. My mistake. I hope the aetherbattle was as fun as it looked!
Ixion2007-03-21 08:39:41
Well I'm sure we were biased, but hoo boy was it fun to see them implode!
Catarin2007-03-21 11:21:23
It was clearly fun for Magnagora. I don't personally think it was fun. I think it will be fun using an aethership to defend *from* bombarding but the bombarding itself is just not looking to be worth it. If more people voluntarily take up the specializations, eh, maybe it will be more interesting.

Karnagan I'm assuming what you mean to say is they will need to be a highly specialized crew or be facing a crew that isn't highly specialized. Which I agree with. And we already know how to practice without blowing each other up, I would like a way to not have to worry about the blowing up. Consider how hard it'd be to learn how to fight if we didn't have arenas to test things out in?

btw, the last post, was going to ask what skill was that? :/
Catarin2007-03-21 14:44:49
It's shadow and it's been bugged.
Ixion2007-03-21 15:14:10
Reason being? Shadow is supposed to keep a ship from getting away.
Catarin2007-03-21 15:23:32
Reason being would be in the bug report which we're not supposed to talk about on forums smile.gif I'll PM you

Commanders and Empaths should both be concentrating on their own ship. Give this target assessment to Combateers instead.

Catarin: An aethership arena would be interesting as hell, but it would also be a bear to code. Beyond that, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Bombardment's usefulness.

Just do a simulated fight: the hard floor for your aethership fights is 50%, and if you fall below it you lose. The only way to learn quickly: I promise you, Mag will be putting effort into it, arena or no arena... wink.gif
Aiakon2007-03-21 16:34:03
Agreed. What I really like about aethercraft is the division of responsibility. I think it would make it less fun and to some extent less skilled, to pass too much of the responsibility to one member of the crew.
