You can't blame them - it's an hour long special after all.

It's out in raw form, though it should take a few days to get a decent sub. :\\
AFAIK Dattebayo gets it the day after, so two days for a special shouldn't be pushing it.

The hidden star village wasn't filler, it was in the manga.
uhm.. I consider myself a Naruto fan boy and I don't remember reading that in the manga
Unknown2007-02-16 13:51:12
It wasn't in the manga.
Kharaen2007-02-16 14:26:22
The Star Village was filler.
I don't like that they are skipping the Kakashi story arc though :/

Fandubbed, or...professional?
Unknown2007-02-17 15:50:12
Professional. Ayup, that's scary.
How about reading my review? It's rather long, but it's also a review of DOOM!! Well, not really. Read it anyway.
Audio: major disappointment - new intro, and it's bad. Semi-random scenes from the first two official intros and some of the episodes. As for the music, I can't really judge it because it was too quiet... and kinda bland. Can't really call it music, really. It's probably a remnant from the american dub, but I never watched it so I can't say. As for the music in the show itself, I have a feeling most of it was cut out for some awfully strange reason. It just seemed so... quiet. Of course, it was a time since I saw the episode, so I can be wrong.
Censorship: Naruto's aired at a kids' channel, so I expected all the bloody elements to be censored. I was right, all of it's either cut out or have the blood edited. It makes some of the plot rather awkward - what did scare Sakura so much when you can't see an illusion of mortally wounded Sasuke? (yes, it was episode 5 - trying to get the bells from Kakashi) But meh, it's a kids' channel so I understand. What I do NOT understand is why they've cut off the scene when Kakashi's telling Sakura to kill Naruto, or else Sasuke dies. It didn't even have any violence in it! Reference to death? Come on, I'm sure these 11-12 year olds can understand that, especially since other references (Sasuke's clan being wiped out and the whole stone with heroes' names on it) were NOT removed. Hmph.
Actors: Surprisingly, better than I expected. Kakashi has a very good voice actor, whom I later (with many chuckles) identified as the Polish dub for Louie Anderson (from his Life with Louie cartoon). Guy's got some talent. Third Hokage's voice, on the other hand, is so dull and devoid of... well, anything, that I doubt if the actor gave a damn about the role. Other voices are more or less decent.
The TEXT: First of all, the question you've all been dying to ask. How did they translate dattebayo? And let me tell you, the answer will kill you, I myself receive d4 sonic damage each time I hear it. Here goes: it's "kumalski?". Now, translating that into English - it's made from two parts, "kumasz?" is a (rather "hip") way of asking "you get it?", -ski is an ending part of many Polish family names (Shiri's ends with -ski, so does mine - I guess it's closest English counterpart is "-ton" like Evilwizardington), which can be also applied to a question to make it sound more "hip". We see a trend here - yup, Naruto's (as the character) texts were all hipped up. Believe it! Urgh... Fortunately, it's not the case for other characters. Most of the script was translated at a decent level, but there were some sentences which made me literally burst out laughing. Unfortunately, they're impossible to translate to English - "kumalski" gave me enough trouble as it is. Ah, and all the names are pronounced like in the original version, as well as terms like Jutsu or Genin. Jutsu titles are translated though.
Overall:
Pros: unintended hilarity, original pronounciation (I hate american "Sasuke/Sasquatch"!), better voice actors than expected
Cons: too much censorship (I think even the american version was less strict), hipped up Naruto, music, especially in the intro

My dad's side of the family are all from Poland, and my last name end's in a -ski as well, as does every other polish person's last name I know from Highschool or College. You wouldn't imagine how many telemarketers or what-not would type it -sky though. Why? Why do they think it's a y? is that more American, well tough my name isn't from America.
Shiri2007-02-17 16:51:43
I had two polish teachers back at Carres...Mr. Brylewsky (with a y!) and Dr. Szewczyk. So it's not totally unjustified that they make that assumption.
Normally people just give up at my name though. Especially if they have to get my full name and I have to tell them one of my middles is "Tadeusz."
Anyway, vis. the series...it's been so long since I watched a decent episode of Naruto that I've forgotten if it was any good to begin with. This isn't so bad though. Beats the filler, oi. Did anyone else not follow what the hell the "secret code messages" were supposed to be though? It looked like they were trying to write Shippuuden but apparently not. (The "OOC" asides were a bit jarring too, bah.)

Tell them it's Thaddeus and avoid confusion.
So, which episode number is it I should start with?
Vix2007-02-17 19:03:58
It's number 221 if you count everything before, but Dattebayo has it as Naruto Shippuuden 001-002.

There is a contest where you win Naruto games if you write down the code words and send them in to TV Tokyo, but it's Japan-only so Dattebayo left out that portion in their sub.
I really didn't have a problem with the episode though. Slightly filler content because they want to stretch it out and not have true fillers later in the series, but that's understandable.
Shiri2007-02-18 03:57:36
Ohhh. That makes more sense.
