I went to see a movie based on a comic book.
I did not go to see a historically accurate movie, nor did I go to try and find flaws in the movie on a grand scale.
I watched with a very level attitude. The Spartans were indeed handsome. The nudity was done much better than what others would have done. One could say tasteful, but then again I'm not someone well learned in the arts.
Those who argue it's racist or something about homosexuality...I ignore them. It's a movie. You can get worked up about it elsewhere. People SHOULD be able to say "It's a movie, that world is different than ours. I may not like certain parts, but it's beyond my control. I should not believe a movie is more accurate than other things." It's kinda like there internet, no? Don't trust everything you read.
Historically...you'd have to ask the people themselves. If you are suddenly covered in burning hot ash and preserved, how much would the people of the future understand what you are doing?
Great movie overall. A few things could have been improved, but I give it two thumbs up. I got pumped up to do some fighting, which is liable to carry over to Belegarth practice this Sunday.

Haha yeah. The only thing I wanted to see but didn't was another badass 1v1 fight between the Persian decapitator sword-armed dude and a Spartan.
Druken2007-03-10 15:29:48
That thing was ridiculously disgusting.
What did you think of the paraplegic member of Xerxes(sp?)'s harem?

Just got back from seeing this movie.
I could tell you how great the CGI and cinematography was. I could tell you how amazing the actors played their parts, and how one could see the fire of Sparta in the eyes of their king.
However, that would show that I'm not shallow.
What I'm going to say is this: amazing physical specimens, clad merely in leather loincloths and cloaks, sweat dripping from their bodies as they graphically rip apart their adversaries in a primal display of unbridled testosterone. One word for it, ladies: Mmm.
Seriously. Must see for guys who like realistic graphic violence. Must see for ladies who can respect an army of mostly-naked warriors. And incredibly delicious fighting and storytelling. Yay, blood and war!

And it's twice as good on IMAX, thank God AMC put one in my part of KC.

You saw it on IMAX?!?!?!?!?!
No I must go check the Cosmosphere website, hope they're playing it IMAX style, and perhaps plan a long drive to Hutchinson to see it again...
Desitrus2007-03-11 00:57:51
Hutch is closer than Olathe? (Not that I know where Derby is!)

TEARS OF SADNESS FOR THE COSMOSPHERE HAS CHOSEN TO PLAY LEWIS AND CLARK INSTEAD OF 300! Oh, woe is me...
Hell if I know which is closer. I don't know where Olathe is...but Derby's about four miles outside of Wichita.
If I have to find a ride to Olathe to see it...I just might.

"Lewis and Clark" is a lot like "300." I mean, replace all the Spartans with two traders and all the battles with a big river, and it's basically the same movie.
Desitrus2007-03-11 01:08:08
Well, AMC's corp hq is here in KC, so we have one of their crazy pilot theaters. Menus are displayed on animated 36sh inch plasma screens, two IMAX screens, 28 normal. Drinks and popcorn cost more than a normal theater though. Hutch is closer to Wichita by about an hour, actually.

Yes. Two goons in a boat discovering parts of America. Versus scantily-clad warriors in a bloody battle of honor and freedom. Perhaps I've been short on sleep and braincells for awhile, but...WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?

He's probably not interested in it for the same reason a good amount of the female populations would be.

Having just gotten back from this incredible movie, I really think we should all silence ourselves and just appreciate this as the greatest action movie ever made. Forget racism, forget homosexuality (of which I saw neither) and just appreciate the awesome cinematic value of this epic movie.
Seriously, you people read far too much into things meant to be taken simply as entertainment.

Excellent, excellent movie. Blatantly made from a graphic novel, and I mean that in the best possible way. There are several scenes where I could almost imagine I was turning the pages. Well acted, especially whoever played Leonidas.
That's really all I can say. It was just awesome, and exactly what it should have been.

The movie was totally hodius (that means cool). After the movie I found myself wanting to scream out Sppppaaarrttaaaaaaa over and over again, but I restrained myself. o.o
Great imagery & story. I really liked the ending.
************
SPOILER
When Leonidas told the deformed mutant traitor (forget his name) "I hope you live forever" at first, I thought it was an apology. But no, thinking more about it I realized that he knew he was going to die, and if they met in the afterlife, he was going to do some serious pwning. Great line, great scene imo.

Even discounting any afterlife shenanigans, the greatest honor for a Spartan was to die with glory in battle. Ephialtes wanted to be a Spartan more than anything, and you could see the pain it caused him to hear that.

So awesome! I was there with like 20 people from my school and we were in the very front row, and when
she killed that tratorious gerghamahwag I think we blew out the eardrums of people in the back row. Such a wonderful, amazing movie. Shield riposte FTW!!!
Is it bad that I thought of Lusternian skills when watching the movie?
