This makes me remember the forum of the game I used to play before finding IRE, where the biggest debate was over what was 'canon', the second was because of people who mispelled it as 'cannon'.

The only place the official explanation can come from is the admin, are you smoking something? Anything we come up with is unofficial. What's the point of IC research, if it's just you poking around, emoting a bit, and coming up with whatever you thought in the first place? Sure, it's probably fun RP, but it doesn't solve the issue, because anyone can do that, and their "research" might lead to an entirely differnent conclusion. I think you're mistaking research with "making things up."

Estarra has stated atleast 3 times that the library on Avencha peak is canon and should be seen as comming from the admin themselves, along as you make sure you also read the comments and notes on the piece as well.
You think the admin do anything besides "Making things up"? It is a world of fiction afterall.
Sylphas2007-03-19 00:26:22
Your reality is not that of the rest of us. I can't argue with you.
Daganev2007-03-19 00:37:47
Are you playing a game invented by a team of designers or not?

When people rely on God parting the heavens and descending to Earth to give an answer, then refuse to move from their original understanding (which may still be wholly or partially truthful) until God descends again to give an answer, you get things like Young Earth Christians and Creationists. We have a word for Young Earth Christians. It's "idiot."
Don't be an idiot.

That's at very least irrelevant, if not actually disingenuous. Perhaps Sylphas would have been clearer to say "canonical" instead of "official", but what he said is true. Make up all the explanations you want, just don't expect them to be accept as true; if you want canon, you don't get to make it.
In any case, being disingenous and attacking strawmen isn't nearly as bad if you don't also top it off with insults. Next time spend the time you spent choosing the insults on checking if your argument is germane.

Why do you need a third-party source to verify something that you believe/want to believe/don't understand? Do real people have that sort of certainty? Does the game that we play offer that sort of certainty in regards to a lot of the fundamental questions? It's not irrelevant. It's hyperbole. It's making a point to refute his repeated cries that the admin offer an answer for something unusual or controversial, even though precedent doesn't dictate that we get answers all the time.

Heh, Star Wars fan's have a big problem with what is canon as well (movies vs books vs other series of books). We had a saying from a SW forum I used to be apart of: "George Lucas was shot out of a canon cannon."
It expressed our frustration and stood as a definition as well.

Hi, I love tangents!
I'm currently playing in a starwars tabletop RPG where the GM decided that EVERYTHING published is canon. All the movies, the books, the animated series, the comic books, the video games, all of it. Including the bizzare things, and the stupid things, and the contradictory things. It's awesome because there will be some RETARDED situation, and we'll go, "What the hell?!" and he'll go, "It's canon!" and we'll go, "Oh, okay," and just run with it. Can't argue with "canon," right?
But regarding this change, the Hartstone are dealing with it. Only Serenwilders have issues with it. RP stuff and stop whining, is all I have to say.

Yes we are, and we're not being idiots about it.

So the change was that saplings of druids in their demesne aren't as easily removed? What's the problem with that? There's a billion of reasons you can come up with as to -why- that is. And if you want IC research why do you post on an OOC forum instead of.. well researching IC? Blacktalon and Hartstone are unlikely to ever sit down at a round table and discuss the matter anyway (IC anyway, but since OOC info shouldn't be taken IC it comes out the same).
Honestly, I don't quite see why this was brought to the forums. It sounds more like an excellent topic for a prestige book for me.

You don't need anything to decide what to believe.
You need canon to have canon.
If you still can't tell the difference between these things, go get a dictionary. Ignorant is better than disingenuous precisely because it can be fixed.

The problem is that sometimes, when you make Canon-- if the admin don't know about it or don't care about it, your "Canon" will get overturned in favour of a new one. (See: Serenwilde, Faethorn)

That's just a risk you have to take. If you're loud enough with it, then your patrons may notice and choose to run with it - and hopefully, if they don't, they'll factor in a get out clause so your characters don't look stupid.

Again, the only canon is the prestige books in the Library on Avencha's peak.
If you want something to be canon, you write a book on the subject, it gets published, it gets critiqued, it gets commented on, and then it become Canon.
Gwylifar, you were not here when that change was made to the game, so I understand your confusion.

By the way, the prestige books are only "canon" if the comments by the Divine Scholars approve it as such-- and even then, I'd expect that sort of canon to be trumped by events that fit the Official Canon.

There is a whole sequence of events that must happen before it becomes canon.
