Hrm,

Masks?

Some toss outs for those looking into masks. I'm not very good at making whole skillsets, so these are just ideas. Abeit, very basic ideas.

Flamemask: Fashion a mask which allows you to breathe flames (Something like Dracnari?)
Icemask: Mask that breathes cold damage
Clearmask: Allows you to see in duststorms, blizzards, etc...
Watermask: Breathe underwater.
ScaryMask: Dunno, helps you with depowering denzins?
Mawmask: Allows you to bite someone, dealing so much damage and bleeding?
Facemask: Requires 3 sketches of the target. While wearing this mask, you appear to be the person the mask is designed after.

Maybe some way to bond to your mask and leave it at a location and listen and see through it?

Ooh I like this. What if there was a stealthmask? That changed your appearance when you walked in the room.

A masked loboshigarus enters from the west
Who here shows A masked man.

Here we go... Technomancy! No, seriously! laugh.gif But not like with computers and what-not. Simple machines powered by magic. This is probably all crap, but I needed something more interesting than work to do at work today! laugh.gif

The primary skillset would be Elementalism. You'd learn how to make simple bombs. gadgets, elaborate machines that you can infuse with magic and use against enemies.

Parts - Create parts for your mechanical wonders. (It'd be like woodcraft in Arts, where you can make several different kinds of things with your commodities. Things like shells and rods and cogs and widgets and levers and so on.)
Assembly - Assemble your parts into machines. (You'd have the ability to assemble, but you would have to know the specific machine to create it)
Infuse - Infuse your machine with magic. (You'd have the ability to infuse machines with specific magical energies using the elements to create various effects)
Bomb - Create simple bombs to be tossed at your enemies. (using shells, you'd create hollow bombs. They'd have to be infused to work and they can be infused with different things)
Glue - Using elemental energies, you can create a thick glue. (a bomb infused with glue would coat every personal enemy in the room where it exploded with a sticky substance making movement difficult)
Flash - Blind your enemies (when the bomb explodes, a flash of light would blind all the personal enemies in the room)
Concussion - Stun your enemies (when the bomb explodes, the force of it causes deafness and stuns them or causes head-injury related afflictions like stupidity or something)
Tiny Bot - Assemble your parts into a small bomb carrying robot (a wind-up toy that can carry a bomb a short distance - like say, two room in one direction)
Incindiary - If the explosion doesn't get em, the flames will! (this bomb explodes causing damage to and setting personal enemys on fire)
Flying machine Assemble a machine and take to the skys! (Well, just what it says! laugh.gif )
Big Bot - Assemble your parts into a large bomb carrying robot (still a wind-up toy, but a bigger one that can go up to 5 rooms away in a single direction)
Homing Bot - A more complicated machine that can find a target. (you have to infuse the bot itself with magic, which allows it the intelligence needed to find it's target and it can carry a bomb or other item)
Spy Bot - Send a spy to be your eyes and ears. (a bot you infuse with magic - the more magic you infuse into the bot, the less likely it is to be detected and the more detailed it's reports. Too much magic will burn the bot out though, so you'd have to decide how to balance secrecy and detail against longevity)
Timer - Time your explosion perfectly. (set a timer on your bomb so it'll explode after a set amount of time, like up to 30 seconds or something)
Passenger Plane - Carry your friends into the sky! (infusing your flying machine with magic will make it strong enough to carry a group. The more magic, the more people - but too much and it'll explode!)
Clone bot - Create a bot to take your place! (assembles a bot which generally looks like you. You then infuse it with magic to make it more like yourself and with enough magic, you can power the bot and use it to confuse your enemies.

Also... I've been writing this off and on between work related work tasks since like 2:15 so, I'm sure by now there's like a million better ideas. But hey... I did write it all out! laugh.gif

Shamarah's idea is amazing. I really like the concept, if not the name.

I also like the idea of some athletics alternative for warriors.

I will try to think of one.

I can see it now...

A small, whirring, humanoid figure waddles in from the east, coming to an abrupt stop as it crashes into a rather large obstruction.
1000h, 1000m, 1000e, 10p ex-/10.13.20.560/
You blink.
1000h, 1000m, 1000e, 10p ex-/10.13.23.350/
You say, worriedly, "What is that?"
1000h, 1000m, 1000e, 10p ex-/10.13.25.010/
Bill shrugs.
1000h, 1000m, 1000e, 10p ex-/10.13.26.920/
The small, whirring, humanoid figure emits a loud popping noise, then explodes in an inferno of shrapnel and fire.
100h, 1000m, 1000e, 10p ex-/10.13.35.560/
You bleed 200 health.
0h, 2067m, 3380e, 10p ex-/10.13.36.820/
omg
0h, 2067m, 3380e, 10p ex-/10.13.37.025/
You are dead and cannot do that.

Jigan2007-04-24 21:17:09
Mm, another mask?

Hornedmask: Headslam does damage now and has less of a stun for you. (Ironmask?)

Nice idea, but I'm not sure the flavour fits. Relatively simple clockwork machines have a basis in Lusternia, though I'm not sure relatively elaborate, magic-infused gadgets like these do.

On a side note, a clockwork skillset would be great for a tradeskill.

Various Masks including Elemental Ones

The problem with things spanning multiple elements is the fact that only one organization is linked to a specific element. It'd be awesome if we could have it so that your skill in that skillset could be linked to your elemental plane, but would there be enough other skills to fill out an entire skillset?

Keep that in mind when thinking about skillsets with elemental skills!
Jigan2007-04-24 21:25:17
It could be worked that alchemists could create certain chemicals which react to heavy breathing in certain ways for the masks. Or, it could be that one mask is crystal. For so much power, it churns out fire, water, Taint, whatever you want. The basis is that the crystal was refined to reflect the properties of the power in the person. (Naruto reference, like the chakra testing paper. Bleh.)

Edit: Whatever you want meaning however the Divine wants to work it.

Yeah... I prolly went a little nuts. Ah well, I didn't think it was very good anyway laugh.gif.

But yeah... a clockwork/gadgetry skillset would be awesome. Someone with a better imagination than me needs to come up with one that'll work! laugh.gif

If I don't include one of your skills suggestions below, it's MOST LIKELY because they seem very limited, and it'd be hard to populate a skillset on those topics alone, or I don't believe the mythos fits Lusternia. Though maybe something that gives astral insanity from usage? (Ha!)

QUOTE(Kromsh @ Apr 24 2007, 02:31 PM) 401236
-Archery (yay!)

I like this idea, but I have to feel there's some reason that it hasn't been included yet. Hmm...

-Something that ivolves protection of others (guardians in the true sense of the word)

Sounds like a huge support option, and I'm not sure how many people would go for that over a personal option.

-Something with shapeshifting (turn into animals, maybe other races, or possibly just changing specific parts of the body)

Could be interesting, but difficult to mesh into the skills that already exist, unless it had its own balance..

-Something revolving around rage (barbarism, etc, possibly enraging of others/groups as well?)

Could be interesting, but doesn't jump out at me. Maybe if it was fleshed out more?

-Abilities to turn mundane items into limited-but-useful items (for attacks, healing, etc, I dunno)

Out of all the ideas so far, I like this idea only second to Shamarah's! I don't know why, but something about taking miscellaneous items and turning them to your advantage is very interesting to me.

-Various benefits and abilities, depending upon which plane you currently are (neat idea, probably OP and/or useless)

I think this might be more effort than it's worth, in the end. Hmm... confused.gif

-Um...creating an entourage of useful beasties-- from your mind! (I don't know...)

How would we differentiate this from the other entourage based skills?

Granted, but is it worth it, on the part of the mortal, to gain the powers when you know you'll be backstabbed and tentacle raped once Kethuru is free?

1) Yes, 2) The mortals need not be aware of the plans, nor expect to live to see the day, and 3) They may actively want to see the Day of the Tentacle.

Fit this in with Gadgetry/Clockwork?

As Fain is testing the waters for possible neat ideas for new skillchoices for existing archetypes, I'd like to share some thoughts.
  • Skills should be able to be shared among different cities/communes. Thus, a "demonic" skill would probably not be a good secondary skill (who else besides Magnagora would use it?). However, a skill based on "darkness" may well be logically shared by Glomdoring and Magnagora.
  • Skills should generally not rely or be centered around on elementalism (i.e., earth, air, water, fire, or paralemental dust, etc.) as this is reserved for mage specializations.
  • We especially like skills related to cabala/hermetica for prerequisite high magic spellcraft (like gematria, etc.).
  • Likewise, for low magic prerequisite spellcraft, we especially like skills related to natural magic (like voodoo, candle magic, etc.).
  • We generally prefer not to have skills create or rely upon actual items or replicas or mobs.
  • Regarding the "technology" level of Lusternia, as I have said many times magic is the root of most 'technology' in Lusternia which is very advanced indeed. Try to refrain from scifi language, such as "bot" instead of "golem" (for example).
  • We prefer unique skill ideas that haven't been seen in other IRE games; however, this does not mean a skill that is cosmetically similar (like voodoo/vodun or numerology) couldn't be made to be unique for Lusternia.

Of course, we could be completely blown away by a skill that doesn't fit any of the above, so continue posting all ideas! These are some thoughts I had from browsing this topic.

Hey, someone with more initiative: you heard the man! (Also, LowMagic prerequisite?)
Rika2007-04-24 22:06:49
I'd just like a bit of clarification of the term 'secondary skillset'. The archetype help files list all guild skills that aren't primary skills as secondary, but the guild help files list only skills that are not primary but must be taken (ie. acrobatics for the bard guilds).
Unknown2007-04-24 22:11:15
Hrm, I would like a skillset that could be shared by Magnagora/Serenwilde. Maybe golem crafting? Animating globs of soil to do you're bidding? Including suicidal bomb golems?

Take a look at HELP 9.3.

Those are all "secondary skill(sets)".

Bottleblast: Shatter a bottle or vial, causing temporary blindness and minor bleeding
Strangle: Minor asphyxiation damage with a pocketbelt, opponent must cure like a normal entanglement
Disgust: Eat an item of food then vomit all over your foe, causing stench and "shyness" (running away)

Just to add to this idea a bit more.

Saltthrow: Throw a pack of salt at your target. Depending on wounds, the target is stunned. More wounds, more stun?

Spicethrow: Throw a packet of spices in your target's eyes. Blinds them. Also makes the eyes more tasty for plucking?
