Back to The Real World.

I recently came into a bunch of old ps1 games. I mean, a TON. A friend of mine is going off to serve in Iraq ( again sad.gif ) and this time he left me all of his old video game stuff that I didn't already have. He gave me his ps1 collection because I already have a ps2,xbox,xbox360 etc. I never had a playstation...I don't know why, really. I guess in the mid to late 90's I was too busy on my N64 and computer. I luved my precious N64. I've always been a big rpg fan and was sad to hear about all the rpgs coming out on the ps1 back then but couldn't play them because I didn't have a playstation. *shrug* So I'm torn. Its like an rpg overload. This guy had everything. I'm looking at it all now, breath of fire 3&4, suikoden 1&2, star ocean, xenogears, wild arms, chrono cross (already played it, amazing) and the list goes on. So many rpgs. I dont know which to play first!

Can anyone recommend anything?

TimeCrisis, who cares if its not a RPG

He has that! ohmy.gif

edit: or i should say I have it now. Kekeke

FF7, obviously, if you haven't played it before. tongue.gif

Otherwise, Final Fantasy Tactics was a great game (if you're into that kind of turn-based strategy/RPG deal). I lost my disc of it about 6 years ago, and I've been missing it ever since. sad.gif

Edit: I also played Breath of Fire III a lot when I was young. Like..7 years old ish young? I hardly had any idea what I was doing, but that was still really, really fun. happy.gif

BoF3 is the best of the series, FF7 is -awesome-, 8 and 9 are good enough, CC is good enough, FFT is awesome, I only played WA3 on PS2, same for SO, and no clue about suikoden.
Unknown2007-04-14 02:07:32
Of course I've played FF7, whaddaya take me fer, a caveman? (Played the computer version back in the day) Been playing BoF 3 and its pretty amusing so far I must say biggrin.gif

oddworld series is also good. as Shiri says, Breath of Fire 3 is good. Don't forget Valkyrie Profile and Vagrant Story. And ummm... perhaps Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is good.
Shiri2007-04-14 02:18:11
Oddworld isn't an RPG, however Lysandus is correct - both Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus were -amazing- games for their time and still worth playing today, however getting all 300 mudokkons (sp) in Exoddus is a bitch without some kind of guide (I suggest Sinjin's Guide to Oddworld if that's still on the 'net somewhere). Vagrant Story is good, but too complicated for its own good; it's not that it's hard to understand, but all the factors you need to balance simply reach a point at which you will find some weapons achieve next to nothing against any foe. Also, RISK is kind of annoying. Plotline is confusing as hell until you reach the end. (Last boss highly obnoxious, be warned.) Valkyrie Profile just bugged out and crashed for me, and I never played castlevania, so I can't tell you about those.

Applying Oddworld to Lusternia:

To Pilgrim: "Follow me."
Pilgrmi: "Okay!"

Guiding blind players: "Follow me."
Blind players: "Okay!" (Let them move towards a cliff or something.)

I have a lot...

Square:
Chrono Cross (worst sequel ever.)
Parasite Eve (Square's first cinematic RPG, sadly much too short a game. Can be finished easily within 10 hours.)
Vagrant Story (my personal favorite on the PS1.)

Final Fantasies:
FFT (lots of fun, lots of options), FF7 (this game started RPG popularity), FF8 (an advance in graphics for Square, though not much else to boast), FF9 (rather enjoyed it, especially the card game), FA (FF4 and FF5, with FF5 only released on this disk >.>), FC (zomg, Chrono's marriage is nicely animated).

Soul Reaver, Legacy of Kain. (Both games very different, but following the same story arc, just different times in it. Becomes more understandable with the PS2 SR and LoK. LoK is kind of gross...really gross...while Soul Reaver is mesmerizingly fun.)

Vandal Hearts 1&2 (Bleh.)
Suikoden 1&2 (I loved these games, even if they aren't wholly popular.)
Wild Arms 1&2 (cowboy RPG, very fun.)
Grandia (Kids on an adventure!)
Dragon Warrior 7 (I can't seem to like any of the DW/DQ games :/ )
BoF3 (while good, I think Bof:Dragon Quarter is the best of the series, for the PS2. Second favorite game for the PS1.)
Legend of the Dragon (cheasiest RPG ever.)
Lysandus2007-04-14 03:28:28
Oi, Vandal Hearts, missed that game. In fact first game I've played in my life. biggrin.gif

bdsm sex bunnies or something..

I wouldn't call Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain RPGs either, they're more like Zelda-style adventure. They all have a really interesting story but fall down on gameplay imo (clunky combat, puzzles get frustrating if you can't figure it out - spent AGES trying to find the first boss when I was younger). Still worth trying if he gave you them though, I'd just recommend renting it over buying it, if you see what I mean.

EDIT: Chrono Cross is hardly a masterpiece. And it is a terrible sequel, because CT was one of the best games ever made. It's still good though.

Also, no, Ashley Riot's hair is never explained, but eh. Now that I think of it, Sydney reminds me of ed from FMA too. Hm.

EDIT EDIT: Damn, you guys make me want to play VS again, but I don't think I ever got it back from the friend I lent it to like 3 years ago.

My experience on Final Fantasy Tactics was always...strange.

There was that one port level, where you first fight like two wizards, a knight, an archer, and maybe a few squires. Since I was low level, magic hit me HARD. (This was probably four, five story battles into the game)

So, I left, fought in the Wilderness until I was like level 20, came back, and OWNED them (story enemies don't scale with your level, wilderness enemies do.)

For the rest of the game, each of my enemy's attacks did around 1/4 my health because I was 20 levels behind on armor. happy.gif ('cause the shops sell new things as the story moves along.)

Edit: And my PS1 constantly crashed when I made the mistake of making one of my Levitating people try and ride a chocobo. Man, I -always- did that.
Diamondais2007-04-14 03:35:17
That looks like a bug..
Lysandus2007-04-14 03:37:03
Oooh, don't forget Alundra. The 2nd Alundra SUCKED, the first Alundra was kickass for me

EDIT:
Ooooh, Disgaea, love that game as well. Humor was okay and so was the story. Too bad it isn't PS1 tongue.gif
Shiri2007-04-14 03:37:09
Chrono cross was not crap. It just wasn't good enough to meet the expectations it rightfully should have.

EDIT: I found Alundra deathly boring for some reason...what was good about it for you, Lysandus?
Lysandus2007-04-14 03:39:43
Dunno, maybe it's just me. I like its gameplay and storyline for me. But when I just saw some of its gameplay clips in youtube... it does remind me of Zelda or something.
Kharaen2007-04-14 03:40:44
Mm, Ogre Battle was kickass fun for the PS1 (and SNES as well.)

And meh, too many useless characters in Chrono Cross, ALL of them with SOME kind of accent (what the hell?)
