Viravain just closed another thread, and things are getting sillier and sillier. I can't really say much except that the fact that nobody ever closed threads this voraciously seems to indicate that Viravain does it out of her own judgement with no consideration for the community at large which is both bigger and older than herself, and that she acts without any backing from the moderation team.

Or, that nobody bothers to moderate except her. But seriously, when you have this one person closing virtually every thread that steps a milimetre out of line, it looks bad, for the person and the moderating team as a whole.

You have no idea of what you speak, Verithrax. That is the first time I have had to close a thread in a very long time, months being a very long time, and generally let you say what you want to say. I draw the line when I receive reports and complaints from players. I am not a heavy handed mod nor will I ever be, but when issues are brought to my attention I do not and will not ignore them. I did not have to leave a reason for closing the thread but out of courtesy for those that were reading it and responding to it, I did.

Do your personal attacks ever stop?

There is a very visible line between intelligent (if mildly biased) observation and personal attacks, Daganev. Verithrax has not crossed it.
Verithrax2007-04-30 20:17:49
"It looks bad" is not a personal attack. Pinning the "personal attack" bogeyman on people who disagree with you looks really, really bad.

That was not a personal attack. If I were to say that Daganev is a poo-poo meaniehead, that would be a personal attack. If I were to ascribe the qualities of poo-poo meaniehead-dom to Daganev, that would be a personal attack. If I say that Daganev is behaving like a poo-poo meaniehead, or that his behaviour is otherwise shifty, or perhaps unwise, that is a statement of fact. I would very much like to hope the moderators themselves know what a personal attack is.

Having read the thread, I'm with Viravain.

If you can't play nice, you should have your toys taken away.

Sure. I've seen worse threads that weren't modded. But that wasn't a particularly pleasant discussion. And I'm sure you're capable of being polite if you make an effort/are forced to it. It will do you some good to try, in any case.

This is neither intelligent, nor an observation, it is a slew of baseless accusations.

This is a degrading statement based on nothingness, which is both insulting and an attack on Viravain -the person-.

I believe he said seems to indicate, which definitely makes it an observation. Again, it could be a biased observation, but it is not a personal attack.

Nah. You're both playing semantics.

No one gives two hoots whether or not you insulted Daganev according to your personal definitions. The tone and character of that thread was becoming unnecessarily unpleasant.

Thus it was closed.

End of story.

Actually. I'm not sure I like the pro-moderation me. It's anti-my quasi-liberal principles. I'm going to ssh now.

To what host?

To be fair Verithrax, in most of the threads here in Real World, you've been--at least in my opinion--dangerously skirting the line separating personal attacks, when it comes to things you're passionate about. You can disagree with people and still be civil and polite.

These forums are moderated. If you don't want moderated forums, you are welcome to start your own forum! I think our moderators do a more than adequate job. Though mistakes can and will be made, I am pleased with how our forums are usually civil. I don't really understand people whose sole aim appears to be being as disruptive and unpleasant as possible, or to craft veiled insults or sarcastic barbs under the guise of "opinions"--but really sometimes enough is enough.

Most of the time, yes. However, ideally, that wouldn't be an issue.

I believe you were ninja.gif 'd.

I've never noticed a problem with the moderation here. I think it's at a good level.
Hazar2007-05-01 01:01:22
SHOUTING. LOUD NOISES.
Noola2007-05-01 01:19:56
I LOVE LAMP!

(Sorry... Hazar started it. Triggered an Anchorman flashback... )
Sylphas2007-05-01 01:23:09
I'm not sure what the problem with the other thread was, exactly. Verithrax was holier-than-thou as usual, and Daganev was making statements of absolute fact when they really weren't, as usual. It didn't really go much farther than any other thread, unless I missed a lot of deleted stuff, which I can't quite believe, having been pretty active on it.
Unknown2007-05-01 01:25:32
You didn't miss anything.

This is madness.
Vix2007-05-01 01:33:22
We could probably even use more moderators. Richter's gone inactive, hasn't he? Only this time, if another one is to be selected, it most definitely should not be done on a basis of post count.

Ooooh, pick me! Me! ninja.gif

(And yes, I'm joking tongue.gif)

I voted they should dictate more, if not for anything else, then just to be devil's advocate to anyone screaming about the injustice of having personal attacks removed. Though I have to agree that two dozen snide semantically corrective comments can be worse then one personal attack, even though the former breezes by and leads to general frustration, and the latter gets clamped down on.
