Either it's placed above the sternum - between the clavicles, underneath the trachea, or it is the sternum
I think it might be directly below the sternum.
I think that bald is best, but fleshy tendrils could work depending on how they they are done. Real hair will need to wait until 16 IC year from now.

People that roleplay having four legs.
Horses with 2 broken legs can't move. 1 broke leg would result in a awkward hobble.

Horses != kephera with four legs, which should not exist because they only have two.

I dunno... Fat Illithoids would have trouble feeding if it was just underneath the sternum.
And the problem with fleshy tendrils is that they're 1) unprecedented, come-out-of-nowhere features, and 2) What the hell is a fleshy tendril? Is it a tentacle? Just a tendril of inert flesh? What is it for?

How about we use common sense and base our character descriptions on things that are logically justifiable and make sense? We're talking about TENTACLES ONE PEOPLE'S HEADS here, not some minor abnormality. Tentacles don't just come out of nowhere; where the hell do you get them? "Oh, my mum screwed a cuttlefish?"
To be honest, I doubt people are thinking tendrils as in squid or Japanese schoolgirls.
When I think of tendrils for hair, I think "short little stubby things that might be oily and might resemble a finger". Slightly more realistic, even if it doesn't fit into your already prescribed as correct view.
Verithrax2007-05-16 01:14:28
That sounds bizarre. Really bizarre and in fact even worse than having a head that looks like a cuttlefish's face.

What did the head parts look more like? Fully grown octopus limbs or the red parts on the head of a chicken, but less red.

When I saw the title of this thread, the first thought that ran (naked and throwing fireballs) through my mind was that it would be something along the lines of Queer Eye for the Soulless Guy.

I have an idea that will solve all of this.
How about you sit down and compile the list of acceptable features for every race in the game and then publish them, while going around making sure that everyone is going according to your whim, since you have the keenest grasp of the concept of what each race should look like, regardless of other issues or little details that people may or may not want to add? Be sure to be thorough and leave nothing out: in fact, why don't you go through each race and make a list of possible features that should NOT be.
Here's a starter list for illithoids:
And after you've spent two or three weeks doing this, you can come back here and make another whining post about how nobody is listening to you and that you should probably just stop bothering.
Alternatively, you could just stop bothering, grow an afro, start a painting show on PBS, and say "Hey, this is what illithoids generally look like, here is a good base to start from. Be creative and have fun!"

When you're describing a character, you actually THINK about what is and isn't plausible for that character based on the lore of the game world.
Imagine, for the sake of argument, that someone made a character based on the modern day. Would you make a human character who had a tentacle for an arm and say "Um well, he's a mutant and just because he's a human it doesn't mean he can't have tentacles"? No? I thought not. So there is no valid reason whatsoever to say that an illithoid should have a sea anemone on his head. Fin. Thank you.
Also, @Ayridion, If they have a light in their abdomen, the energy to provide that glow has to come from somewhere. Judging from basic anatomical knowledge, if they have energy being used in such a way, chances are it's the byproduct of an anatomical process, and if it's in the abdomen, then it's likely that that process has something to do with reproduction or digestion. There are no females other than queens (the breeders) who would have a high level of activity in these processes (Unless you're RPing some kind of glutton, but that's unlikely). Therefore, it makes perfect sense that queens would have GlowButtsâ„¢, but not really anyone else.
Hope that was coherent.

It isn't hair, so if you would cut it of it would bleed. I saw that crest thing on hits forehead and small nubs over the skull, and and got an idea. Seems like people don't think it's okay, even though he look like the 'style' guide says mostly.
Noola2007-05-16 16:23:22
The art does show little nubs or spikes or something on the head that could easily be little fleshy tentacles.
Unknown2007-05-16 17:22:47
Fleshy tendrils are okay in my book - Illith was a squid-thingy after all, and even if she wasn't, it isn't as far from the norm to be RP-breaking.
Really, there are much bigger attrocities (if you could consider tendrils one - which I don't) walking around the basin. I remember a half-human dracnari whose description EXPLICITLY mentioned lactating nipples.

The things in the illustration aren't fleshy tendrils; they're dents or tiny horn-like protrusions, which is more acceptable.
And yes, adding new appendages apparently so important they bleed if you cut them off is a big deal.

They're not dents cause they clearly stick out. And if they can be horns, why can't they be little flesy tentacles?
Verithrax2007-05-16 20:19:33
They're not long enough to be fleshy tentacles. They're about the size of a large zit.

Not sure how big your zits are, but the size of the 'growths' proportional to the size of the head says to me that they're plenty big enough to be small fleshy tentacles, or small horns, or whatever.
