Tully's "Quests"

Back to Common Grounds.

I just wanted to get any feedback on some of the mini-quests I had the past few days. I had two art contests as well as paying a premium for Cave Fisher Extermination.

Do people like that stuff? I can do more anytime I buy a buncha credits and convert them to gold, but I want to make sure I'm creating fun tasks people would actually be interested in. A fashion show turned out to be a bust, but some buried treasure during the celebrations last year was appreciated by some. The picture of astral critters also went well.

I can't do it that often, 'cause I'm not made of money, but I figured I'd ask, in case I want to do that kind of thing in the future. Do people want unique challenges, akin to scavenger hunts?

I think they're great. The only thing about art contests though is that those without skill in arts can't participate. And you sure do give out huge prizes, is it manageable for you? Even like a quarter of the amount you currently give out would attract attention I'd say. In any case I like them, thanks Tully =)

I think the concept is interesting, but I agree with Shou- they need to be a bit more inclusive, and perhaps a bit lighter on the pocketbook (so that you can hold them more often). You might even gear some of them towards the younger, less experienced characters.

Just a thought! smile.gif

I knew I was paying too much for cave fishers when I got 30 in 5 minutes.

I only do this every so often, maybe 2 or three months. I'm sure when September rolls around I'll probably do some of this again, I just need to figure out what. I tried doing things for lower but that doesn't get people's attention. (Although a cooking contest which I was giving away 150,000 and 50 credits ended up with virtually no participants).

I guess it's the quality of the challenge. Shorlen seemed to enjoy doing the Astral one, because it's really hard to get pics and sketches of a being trying to kill you!

Amarysee, I had some buried treasure for novices during the 2nd anniversary celebration...I buried a box with a note saying you'd get some gold, so a veteran couldn't grab it.

Maybe once some theater productions come up, I'll have a contest judging the best one or something.

They've all been awesome, even though I couldn't attend any.

Though I'm concerned about how much money you must be paying for it all. This type of fun shouldn't have to be paid for by a single player, if players at all. sad.gif

Perhaps, to gear them toward newbies, you could offer premiums on the Gnome and Fink lords ontop of Smoke Mountain. Or just hold newbie scavenger hunts.

They're nice, but I'd prefer if they were spaced out some more. Too many in a short span of time and it loses the novelty, I think.

Never had a chance to do one, but they're great. Don't overstrain your finances, though.

People seem excited, typically, when you have one. I think they add a lot to the character of Tully. Maybe tone the prizes down. I'd do 'em if I had the skill or knowledge of the game-world.

I think this is the kind of stuff we could do with occurances. It's nice, but it's tough on your cash.

Can't be killed, if by lords you mean the ones that accept corpses.

Other than that, yeah, I like them when I can do them. Just don't spend too much money on us. ;)

That sounds like fun. I had planned out a scavenget hunt and stuff to do in Glom, but I could never get online to actually get the ball running.

What you are doing sounds great, but don't let it hurt your pockets too much.

Sadly, all I could think of today was a couple of begging rituals. Y'know, give a furrikin in Torabolla and a monk in Tosha 50000 gold.

BTW--as far as cash goes, I can afford to pay about $20-$40 a month for Lusternia. I'd feel guilty if I didn't pay Estarra and Co. The reason I can be so generous is because I don't really have a use for the money in game other than having enough gold to buy food and clothes for the character. I've pretty much got all the skills I want, and the only big expense I've made is my recent manse/ship. So it's not like I'm on the level grind or the artifact-grind.

Only thing is RP-wise I have to fudge how a Janitor can have so much gold.

Oh--and all those people who wanted to snuggle me for free credits. harhar1.gif rolleyes.gif

I think people would be more interested if there was some sort of long lasting recognition from winning the challenge. Gold is all well and good but some people don't need it, they'd rather become a little more famous.

I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that but that's my opinion anyway.
Amarysse2007-06-08 02:34:10
The problem I've noticed is that those who need the gold least seem to be the ones who end up winning vast amounts of it.
Furien2007-06-08 02:47:42
Sadly, that's true in most every situation. sad.gif

Heh, I won the Tolborolla one (ironic, that -- I always beg there, because I quest there and I think it's one of the neater areas), and I needed the money! Just came back from a long absence, everything was decayed and I was benig hard on Arel's stash.

Mostly, I only need money to afford books to write in. My favorite part of Lusty is actually getting rewarded for philosophical nonsense, and getting to dig around for the next thing to write some philosophical nonsense about.

I'm bumping this because I've heard negative things about this, but not on the thread itself, which is kinda disturbing because the whole reason I asked about this was to see if the player-base felt they were out of place.

The reason I do these things was to give the players something to do. In my time here, there's been a lot of complaints about not having enough to do that wasn't tied into endless conflict. Someone noticed that during the ascension event talking about the Scavenger hunt, saying it was a nice "change of pace". I've also tied this into Tully's interests, such as Art, so this isn't meant to be something out of left-field and wildly OOC. In the past, there were a lot of wargames, contests, but they seem to have fallen by the wayside a bit.

So I'm just curious, what's the downside?
Unknown2007-06-16 11:47:32
I like these events, personally. Always gives more (not "something", because there's always something to do in Lusternia) to do.

I assume most people you get flak from simply believe "my rp good, u'r rp bad!". Still, these events could use some tweaking:
1. Informing people about them in advance wouldn't hurt.
2. The last one was, I believe, the painting contest? That immediately set off most people, those who can't make paintings yet. It was no surprise that Kaervas won, really, not many people who are both artists and know where to find mobs. In short, I think these events should be more open for the wider populace.
3. Huge rewards aren't necessary, they just make people who didn't win bitter. 10000 gold or something like that can be enough. Also think about RP rewards - making a painting of them, for example.

Would it help if I got a God or Goddess to back me up so it was "anonymous", and people didn't realize it was from me--like give them the gold and the idea? That might be ideal, that way it wouldn't be seen as a grab for attention and get the attention off me.
