Was wondering why we can't have a room for a manse be outdoors? I got a few rooms in my manse that are courtyards and general outdoor areas and being unable to make rooms be indoors/outdoors is totally uncool.

Ok, here's my problem with this: The manses are in aetherspace, so an outdoor area would still need to be enclosed somehow, unless you can breathe in aetherspace, which I doubt since we can't go there without a ship. What if you could have like, a greenhouse where you could grow herbs instead?

Perhaps not literally outdoors but at least a simulation of it. I've always thought of manses like just big simulated environments, I mean people can own entire forests/palaces/giant animals/any other imaginable thing. But outdoor areas would be sweet, and as a toggle feature instead of exclusive artifact.

Mind, I'm not trying to shoot the idea down, I just think it might need to be tweaked a bit more

Manses are bubbles of reality shaped and maintained by will. Why not shape that reality to mimic the outdoors? Or a scene from nightmares? Or anything else you might want?
Manses have no need to be airtight. People don't suffocate on long aetherhunting trips.]
At least, that's how I see them.

Well, it is possible to create a manse with a working flower garden, and even decide whether it's day or night. You can already describe it any way you like, so the only actual reasons I can see (and I could be wrong, of course) for having them marked as "outdoors" would be flying, climbing, or growing herbs... The last, of course, should just not be possible in a private area.

I still don't see what's wrong (besides the extra coding) with adding a cheap (10,000 gold at most) item that would allow you to flag a room as indoors or outdoors. The item, which I'm imagining as a half-open, small wooden box, would work something like:
COVER/UNCOVER BOX - Would set the room as indoors or outdoors, respectively. Destroys the box in the process. Any fliers will be forced down to the ground.
While we're at it, how about adding cheap (25 credits at most) artifacts that would allow you to change the environment type to aetheric (whatever), which would provide all the benefits of that terrain except for the ability to grow herbs. The artifact, which I'm imagining as an aether tuning fork, would work as such:
PLANT FORK - Embeds the aetheric tuning fork in the ground. This is permanent, much like the Stake of Concealment or whatever it's called.
TUNE FORK (type) - Tunes the tuning fork to a specific type of terrain (this can be any on the list of possible terrains, barring a few like divine and chaos).
ALIGN FORK TAINT/WYRD/NONE - Will flag the fork as tainted or wyrden.
STRIKE FORK - Will set the room's properties to the assigned properties. This can be done multiple times in case you get tired of having your living room set to deep ocean.
COVER/UNCOVER BOX - Would set the room as indoors or outdoors, respectively. Destroys the box in the process. Any fliers will be forced down to the ground.

Not a garden per se but you have the general idea. For example, my manse has a courtyard, which is outdoors. Was pretty sad when I had learned that I couldn't stick a silly swing there all because it was 'indoors'.

99% of the reason to want outdoor manse rooms would be solved by my previous suggestion of just allowing artisans to build either indoor or outdoor furniture in manses -- just don't check the outdoor flag in a manse. No worry that that would imbalance anything, either.
Noola2007-06-01 15:15:56
Yeah... furniture is the big deal with indoor/outdoor manse issues. That and certain skills. Like Illusions script and stuff... can't do that in a manse cause it's not urban I think. And while I don't feel like filling my manse with script, someone else might like to.

Bah. No extra items. No extra friggen cost. Manses are ungodly expensive as is, we don't need to drop some more credits for more things.
Manse outdoor rooms good.
MANSE SET ROOM INDOOR/OUTDOOR would be a great addition. Free. I hate that you even have to pay to create exits, destroy exits, set room titles, and describe rooms. I just spent one hundred and fifty thousand gold to buy the box. You know how many players never see that much gold?
And terrain? MANSE SET ROOM {terrain type}.
Only problem is it would require extra coding.
