I discovered an open source port of a game a while back and I've had some fun the last few weeks playing it.

This is basically "The Ur-Quan Masters", an open source release of Star Control 2. Star Control 2 was a combination of an advanced "Space War" simulator combined with a story and gameplay that mimicked another old game, StarFlight. The makers of the game held rights to all the content except the trademark. The Source Code includes Mac and Linux ports.

There's even an entire Wiki devoted to the subject.

This is great game, free, and you should try it. The developers, Toys for Bob, are trying to convince their owners to get work done on an "canon" Star Control 3 (some other developers got the job when TfB wanted more money, but fans don't consider that work Canon).

If you like Lusternia's races and humor, you should really check this out.

I say we dedicate this thread to promotion and discussion about this great game. What's your favourite race? That is... if you're far away in the game to discover them all yet.

Been playing a little too much, work is busy so I've uninstalled it until it gets light again. I gotta work!!!

I've only encountered perhaps a third of the races. I try not to cheat but the wiki can be tempting--I couldn't take the Sylandro probes!!!

I do like the Spathi!

I like the Phunk's "insult" ship, and the Orz are just too surreal. I like the whole dimension-play involved and hinted at with the Orz and the Arilou. Syreen's an interesting take on a retro-cliche. I've only seen a few others.

For those reading, Star Control II is considered one of the greatest games of all time according to gamespot.
