Cleric Archer
Follow a deity that grants access to the Celerity domain. Take Extend Spell and Persistent Spell feats and apply them to your buff spells (Cat's Grace, esp.). This is Forgotten Realms material, so no dice if your DM doesn't allow it.
If you can use Races of Stone, the Gnome in there makes for a great Illusionist. If you work toward being able to take some ShadowCraft Mage and Shadowcrafter levels, your illusions will be able to deal real damage, including poisons, along with the having the shadow subtype, not to mention all the roguish stuff that comes from those classes (lots of ranks in Hide, Move Silently, and Spot). With the feats you'll need to take to qualify for those classes, you'll also end up with a +3 DC to saves vs. your illusions and +8 spell penetration. It also makes for a neat character concept - the shadowy, skulking, stealth/scout/rogue shadowmage with plenty of skill ranks thrown in there, too.
If you're just looking for neat concepts, I've enjoyed playing Cleric/Rogues (I think of Matthew Broderick's character in "LadyHawke") and Half Orc Paladins.

Yeah, unfortunately, I dont think people have been getting the idea. I'm looking for a character that would be fun to play, not a character that would be OP or good at combat. Personally, I don't really enjoy dnd combat so much, so being good at it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Anyone and their brother can OP as a wizard or sorcerer, but that doesnt make a unique idea.
EDIT: Although, I would like to say a few ideas did catch my interest. Dueling Sorcerer, Swashbuckler-Type Character (probably just use a fighter, don't have many extra rulebooks). Not from this thread, but being a kobold sorc might be cool.

I still remember the good old days where we had the 4 core classes, some subclasses, and then Unearthed Arcana with the new classes, with the hopes of getting a revised edition that had the Savant, Mystic, Mountebank, and Jester.
*Sigh* Wish we could alter history...4th Edition promises to break a lot more stuff of old...

No whining on my thread. Personality/character ideas only.

To all of you who are saying 'melee sucks, magic rules', here's a question: What level do you normally start at? 1? 3? 15? O_o Any non-melee class pretty much dies in 1 hit at the lower levels, I've had no end of suffering from spellcasters below lvl 12 or so. It's much easier for me to just pick a higher def/hp class, and not have to worry about keeling over because of a single monster hitting me once.

In one of my campaigns, I had as NPCs two, halfling barbarians who were twin brothers. They spent most of their time in taverns being ridiculously aggressive, getting drunk, and overall rioting. Sort of a Napoleonic complex on steroids.

Zenji - Sleep, Grease, Color Spray, Entangle. All 1st level spells. All of them are save-or-(soon) die at low levels. A wise mage won't let the enemy get near, thanks to using these spells. Only stupid wizards memorise Magic Missile.
Low-level casters' bane are normal missiles though. Of course, they can work around that with Shield from 1st level, and, slightly more advanced a spell, Protection from Arrows from 2nd. After that... hoo boy. They're unbeatable if played correctly.
Also, if a caster keels over from a single blow, it means the player put too low into their CON stat.
Okay, enough of this. Dyr asked for character concepts, not powergaming advice (not that powerful characters are less fun to play and RP with than subotimised ones!). And character concepts he shall receive!
1. A renegade drow who is NOT a Drizz't clone. Heck, he's not even good. I suggest someone evil, or neutral but very selfish, who was cast out for crimes or plotting (not that drows don't plot, they just don't get caught) and plans to return and take over the place when he's stronger. At first, hangs out with the party purely for safety reasons (safer in a group), but as he grows in power so does his attachment to the rest of the group. Hell, just because you're evil doesn't mean you can't have friends to care for!
2. A disciplined and focused rogue, planning mastermind type. He'd specialise in burglaries of well-guarded and, of course, expensive items. He'd avoid combat if possible, using a wide range of low-tech gadgets, ropes with arrows being an example. Think of Garret from the Thief series. Of course, his inner focus would make him Lawful!
3. Half-Orc bard, melee build. Be it a powerful nordic scald (mix in a barbarian level or two!) or just a not-so-bright musician who likes to beat people up with his lute when things go pear shaped, hilarity will ensue.
4. A paladin who'd be more of a law-and-order good cop than a knight-in-the-shining-armor-with-a-stick-up-his-ass. As any good cop, he'd spend his free time warning people about felonies, making sure the kids behave and helping citizens with minor jobs.
EDIT: And of course, the classics:
A. A wizard who thinks he is/acts like if he was a cleric.
B. A cleric who thinks he is/acts like if he was a wizard.
C. A rogue who acts like if he was, or actually is, a priest. Not a spell-casting cleric, but still a holyman.

Half-dragon monk who feels a moral obligation, before he attacks, to yell a warning to all enemies about the grave danger they're in.

I've always liked the high INT low WIS illusionist.

An illusionist who fools himself?

That would be hilarious.
"Behold my power! Lo! A dragon appears at my command! I am like unto the gods!"

or even better:
"Behold my po-HOLY WHERE DID THAT DRAGON COME FROM? RUNNNNNNN"

For about a month or so, I've really been craving some DnD, having never played before. Like Sylphas, I can't play with anyone in my local area, so what if we made a Lusternia DnD group? I think I saw a program which let you play in real time online so we wouldn't have to do a crappy play-by-post game.
Daganev2007-06-14 20:02:42
We almost did that for a while, with Shiri, Sadly I had to drop out as soon as it started.

Yeah, thats part of it!
But he might also do things like:
Oh look a large group of orcs, perhaps I will cast a really large illusions of the orcs not being there!

My schedule would probably keep me out of it, but if there's a chance of that, I'd love you all forever. I totally miss playing actual RPGs. Very fond memories of my last BESM game, where I almost sunk our ship trying to lob a hand grenade into a sea serpent's mouth, and having to pop our samurai in the back of the head with rubber bullets when he got too drunk and lecherous.

This is why we limit the casters around here ..
'sides, most DnD campaigns are supposed to work in groups where everyone covers everyone's ass and if one is having trouble, the others back him up....

Hahaha, Dag, thats awesome! If there was to be such a game, I would be interested in playing, although not DMing. Does anyone have a link to the software that would be used, though?
Unknown2007-06-14 21:44:24
i've only played one game. however i had a lot of fun. the dm was a good friend of mine and really knew how too put together a decent story. If we were to have a lusternia one, i would definitly play.
