I've never played DnD before. Always been curious about it, but I've never known anyone who played or was interested in giving it a shot with me so I've never had the chance to.

Much love for the Ubuntu repositories. sudo apt-get install openrpg ftw.
Vix2007-06-15 01:36:46
I have no clue what you just said in that post, Sylphas, but OpenRPG was the program I was thinking of.
Shiri2007-06-15 01:39:53
The one we tried (where Daganev dropped out right after starting, grr) didn't go all that well. Getting a schedule that people can and will stick to is pretty much impossible. The actual mechanics of running the game aren't so bad.
EDIT: Oh, and it wasn't play by post, which sounds TERRIBLE. It was play by MSN/AIM group convo. It was less clunky than you'd think.

I had great fun as a Rogue with a Devil Bloodline. At like.. level 2.. he had +23 or something to Bluff. Was totally insane, but totally great. He couldn't pick your pocket or hide worth a crap, but he could make the guards think -they- were the ones out past curfew

How did you roll your dice? Did you all have physical dice by your computer?

There are lots of dice rolling programs available, actually. Also, a lot of chatrooms have them built in too.
Vix2007-06-15 01:46:21
Pretty sure MSN doesn't though. How would you know a player wasn't cheating?
Shiri2007-06-15 02:05:26
Cheating in D&D would be pretty stupid, but as it happens I think the DM handled it.
EDIT: Which also made it harder to know if something succeeded or failed for the players, which was good.

Aww, what's the fun in that? You can't be all afraid when the DM starts making lots of dice rolls and starts looking at you funny then. I'd certainly be interested in some sort of Lusternia D&D game.
Vix2007-06-15 03:20:39
So that's a healthy response. If we're to start a game, we'd need to know a specific time, and that will definitely be difficult to arrange. We'd also need some experience with OpenRPG (if we were to use it) as well as DM. Daunting.
Sylphas2007-06-15 03:26:20
I can't DM. And my schedule is :censor: right now, but hopefully it'll figure itself out.
Maelvin2007-06-15 03:31:58
I use OpenRPG alot aswell, and would be interested if we started a group.

I was the DM of the game Shiri is talking about, though I don't really think I did that good of a job, it was really hell trying to get everyone on at the same time, since I'm pretty sure our times varied by quite a bit, it meant some of us had to be up early morning, others had to be up late night, and so forth to find the best time, that and it was only weekends when we could do it, meaning half the time people were out.
I wouldn't mind giving it another shot, though from what it looks like, there are people out there who know a heck of a lot more then I would about it.

I've always been interested in playing DND but never got around to actually playing or learning how to play it

I wouldn't mind doing a forum based DnD game.

Someone set this up. I want my Ghaele dammit all. Or a sprite arcane archer, just for the hell of it. Yes, I like my Savage Species book way too much.

Does it have a huge learning curve? I'd like to play too... but I wouldn't want to cause problems being new to it and all.
Sylphas2007-06-16 00:50:06
If you have a good DM, it won't matter. They're the ones who really need to know what's going on, and they basically make the rules. You just have to learn what your character has a shot at doing, and what it can't. I mean, you can -try- to jump clear over a moving wagon, but most people are going to get smooshed.
Vix2007-06-16 01:29:43
I wholly object to playing on the forums. I've played some games on forums specially equipped for handling DnD and sucked. DnD is best played live in my opinion.
