I was looking for that awful Harry Potter fanfic, and got sidetracked reading the "Worst Video Game Ever" thread where someone had mentioned Fallout as one of the best. Rather than simultaneously necro and derail that thread, I figured I'd start a new one.

Fallout 3 is currently in production and seems to be doing better than previous attempts at making the game. It's being produced by Bethesda (Elder Scrolls) rather than Interplay, but the only part I'm skeptical about is the fact that it's supposed to be a first person shooter with the option to temporarily revert to the classic combat system with action points where you go back to real time until they've recharged.

Fallout 1/2 are practically abandonware at this point. I bought them as a bundle at Goodwill, and the last time I saw them retail was ~5-6 years ago at Wal-Mart. You should be able to find them online, and if you can find them in a store it should be around 10 USD for both together.

As you can see, other people actually give useful info instead of semi-trolling like me. Fallouts are relatively easy to obtain - get them! Fallout I is very good, Fallout II is even better. This is the first BIG roleplaying game on the PCs after Betrayal at Krondor.

As you can see from my avatar I am a huge fallout fan.

I actually went to the release party for fallout 2 down in San Jose and I have a shirt signed by many of the people who worked on it.

That said I have about the lowest possible expectations for fallout 3. I have no hope that the people who made the elders scroll games have any idea what makes fallout special. Having a million pointless dialog options in 3d is not going to make a fallout game.

I will avoid further ranting on the subject as I am in this tiny tiny minority of players who greatly dislikes games like Balder's Gate and the various Elder Scrolls.

I strongly suggest grabbing fallout 1 and giving it a try.

It is a perk, I leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out which one.

it is a flashlight he is holding. I like it as it both contains the imagery of hiding who I am, and illuminating the darkness.

Fallout2 was half finished before most of the original team was laidoff/left so the game is an interesting mix of the more serious tone of the first, as well as a more whimsical style.

As this is the real world boards I suppose I can share another fun fact about myself (not that anyone cares). I was born in Klamath Falls, which in Fallout2 is directly referenced (along with other real locations in southern Oregon and California obviously). Yet another reason I so enjoy those games.

so I was playing FO1 and it was not anywhere near being as good as FO2 it made me sad.
