Ships, and Aetherships

This is going to be one of those "well wouldn't it be neat if?" threads.

But hey, I think it would be neat.

I think it'd be neat if we had regular ships, as well as aetherships. Smaller craft could fit into smaller bodies of water, like the seas, and they'd go off of the normal map.

Larger craft could sail on an ocean just outside the Basin, on the same kind of system that they use for Aethercraft (the fancy colored map). This would (eventually) open up some area outside of the Basin.

The skillsets for sailing could be very similar to aethercraft, but due to the fact we already have lots of skillsets, and we'd now have to ship-like skillsets, they should both be our first miniskills, at half the lessons each. Plus, that'd allow more people to get into those skills, and actually USE aetherships and such. The people with lessons in aethercraft could get automatic half refunds, but keep their current skill levels (so, the people with a few lessons would get a few to use in the ship skillset, and the people with trans aethercraft could go trans the ship skills).

Since most of the code and process is existing, it could just be mostly re-done, but on prime, with wooden ships.

Or... put power generators on them, and make... AIRSHIPS.

This idea rocks. biggrin.gif

Ships would be great... if we had an ocean to put them in. Which we don't.

That might be a fine map for a strategic level wargame, but I don't see an ocean when I log in just yet. Not one I can get to anyways. Until I can stand on the beach of an ocean, we have no ocean.

You know how long they have been talking about ships in Achaea? So... this would be Nil to code.

I'm also fairly sure that they adhere to basic human rights for coders over there.

Given the rate at which the admins over here crank things out, I'm pretty sure that Estarra likes to think of them more as "guidelines".

See, they've developed this neat thing called NEW AREAS. It's what happens when they think about making a new area, then they go create the new area, after which we all can play in the new area. I don't recall seeing an undervault when I logged in a few months ago, but you know, it's just funny... I can get to one now.

I wonder why that is.

Yes, just like, OH WAIT, AETHERSHIPS. Ooh, ooh, we could use the existing system to make ocean-faring ships.

Like I posted above. The part you didn't read. smile.gif

I wouldn't mind the airship bit. How you'd work it, I don't know, but trade routes, etc, would be great.
Jitwix2007-06-20 07:03:29
But, we can't have ships in the Inner Sea! The kelpies would sink them! laugh.gif

....will we get surfboards too? Pyrlios could teach us surfing! crazy.gif

Why would we need ships? We'd need islands, or other continents that can only be reached by ship, which would be tough to have make sense. I'll also assume that this would siphon off interest in aetherspace, which they need to push more and integrate more into Lusternia as is.

You mean, like AETHERBUBBLES MAYBE? Oh wait...

Yeah, because vessels that sail on seas, rivers, and lakes have never ever existed in all of history. What a silly idea that would be!
Shiri2007-06-20 13:17:06
Most RL rivers and seas don't also take 30 seconds to tranverse from estuary to source or from coast to coast respectively, mind...
Gwylifar2007-06-20 13:20:45
Presumably if there were river/sea/etc. ships they'd be a means to transport or gather cargo you couldn't carry yourself, not merely a means to get a person somewhere.
Hazar2007-06-20 13:27:28
As cool as this could be, I agree with Sylphas.
Estarra2007-06-20 13:52:07
We will most likely never have seafaring ships. We made the decision to go the aethership route long ago. One reason for this is that all the other realms are going with seafaring ships and we wanted to be different--as usual! Anyway, aetherships will be what we support and develop.

You would make islands like Aetherbubbles? I'm not sure I understand this comment.
Ayridion2007-06-20 19:02:07
He means: aetherbubbles are already similar to the 'islands' you described; they can only be reached by aethership.
Sylphas2007-06-20 22:00:18
Right, and that makes sense. We should focus on aetherspace instead of a nearly identical system that only varies flavorwise, and is actually weaker from an RP standpoint, since you'd have to kludge in a reason for islands to only be accessible by ship.

Aetherspace is fine, stick with that. tongue.gif
