A friend of mine recently gave me a little ball of razor-sharp-clawed energy covered in fluffy black fur and with striking blue eyes. I've been calling him "Sweety", "Precious" and "Kitty" for a few days and think he is now in need of a proper name. I've pretty much given up on coming up with anything so I turn to you, the amazing forum dwellers!

I'll post a picture when I can track down my camera.

Both my supporters and my detractors feel that "Xinemus" would make a good name, although for marginally different reasons.
Shiri2007-07-09 05:11:25
"Pup."

EDIT: Or "Dog." I guess.
Shorlen2007-07-09 05:44:26
Patchou or Patchouli, in memory =D
Shishi2007-07-09 05:46:57
Kitter! That was my cat's name. My family has never been very good at names...
Unknown2007-07-09 05:55:47
furball
Lysandus2007-07-09 05:59:44
Menchie, Kreem, Hanna, Cielo, Cheech, Chong (Don't ask where I get the last two names).

Pusa (Cat in my language)
Tajalli2007-07-09 05:59:44
If you're up for other languages, I always thought that "Sev" (Armenian for 'black') would be a nice name for a black cat. But that's just me.

Along the other languages, I have a cat named Caillte (gaelic for 'lost' - though that was fitting for how I acquired this one).

EDIT: so you could do something in another language, that matches a characteristic about the feline.

Scratch Fury, Destroyer of Worlds!

Also:

I read somewhere that cats respond more to names with the 'S' sound in them. I don't recall where I saw that, but it popped into my head just now

Name it, Hamster. Or Tabitha tongue.gif
Arix2007-07-09 06:32:05
Squibbles! or Fuzzywumplekins, if you want to get strange looks from visitors

Name it Hamster.

That would be an acceptable alternative to "Dog", yes. One-syllable names are better for pets so you can call them easily though.
Ildaudid2007-07-09 06:41:10
Illy or Ildy is all the rave for kittens now a days
Arix2007-07-09 06:46:52
what about Diddy?

I've found that pets, least all the one's I've had, tend to take after their name. My current pet, a long-haired white cat, Dutchess, expectes to be treated as such.

As far as naming a black furball with claws... I prefer foreign words. Simply because they can be something simple and still not sound to Cliche or cheesey.

If it were my cat, I might name it something like...

Perscitus
Malus
Sha-pu

or maybe

Ashi

... I want a kitten now. *sniffle*
Shishi2007-07-09 08:10:50
Oh I remember one of the kittens we rescued once we named spitty. I still like that name.
Arix2007-07-09 08:25:37
ooooh! Call it Nejii, that way when it sheds all over the house you won't feel so bad yelling at it
Gelo2007-07-09 08:35:34
Yini, Nejii, and Jitwix are among my top choices for my pet names.

I can picture Viravain chasing a kitten around with a spray bottle, yelling 'Bad Nejii, not on the carpet!"

We had a black cat that we raised as a stray kitten. Bottle fed and everything. We couldn't come up with a name for him. He eventually got named Kitty Buddy. It was written on a picture frame we had.

He grew up to be a psychopathic murderer hellbent on conquering the human race and very nearly succeeded. Don't name your cat Kitty Buddy.
