Serenwilde monks use a weapon based upon the RL martial weapon called Deerhorn Knives.

For those with forging who are designing, I thought it might be helpful to show you pictures of what they actually look like (being as some designs were questionable on whether it was actually a shofa). Hope this helps!

Very cool Estarra. And here I thought Shofa were inspired by Dune crysknives. Not that it would be a bad thing.

Looks like a good weapon to attack and defend from all sides quickly.

QUOTE(Weapons History)
The Deer horn Knives or Meridian blades are a very unique weapon originating from the Baguazhang (or perhaps more correctly Baguaquan) school of Chinese martial arts. Dong Hai Chuan the founder himself practiced this weapon. There are numerous stories of him killing large groups of armed men who had attacked him. Most of these are apocryphal and probably stem from the story on his original grave marker. It says there that once while travelling outside the city, Master Dong was attacked by many men with weapons. He defeated them all "moving like a hurricane". As he did travel through rough country, it is likely that he would have defended himself from bandits using his Deer horn Knives. They are designed for use against multiple attackers, or any type of weapon. There are techniques for use against the spear, staff, sabre and especially the sword. It has been said the Deer horn Knives are especially good at defeating the sword with their hooking and trapping techniques. ZI-Wu Deer horn Knives come in various sizes. Large ones can be used to scale walls while small ones are used like throwing stars. There are also various configurations like recurve points and knives with either three or four points each. Initially the knives had only three points one of which was slightly curved like a duck's head. It is said the duck's eye, a small indentation on one blade, could be laced with poison. This weapon is taught at the society and a complete history can be found in the member's section

Master Dong is my hero...

Scale walls?

Shofangi has no wall scaling skill.

Since setting a new topic will just be a waste, I'll just put it here.

9.2.6.1 THE SHOFANGI SPECIALIZATION (Kata)

Shofangi is the specialization of kata that is taught by the guild of
the same name in the Serenwilde. Monks taught at the Shofangi School
will develop skills with use of the shofa, sometimes called the staghorn
knives or moonblades.

I think here's a pretty good example on how a moonblade might look like. WC3: Illidan

Those are so cool looking!

Curious, how'd the name shofa get thought up of?

That's probably reserved for a neko-te skill.

Except they're no longer than two feet and consist of two, not one, blades. Yeah, it's a pretty accurate rendition of what a shofa isn't.

It's considered a fae word for the weapons they use.

Deerhorn knives are actually really fun to fight with. I've used them before in my weapons class, and they're truly superb weapons. Very balanced, and you get a really good sense of offense and defense from them.

However, I have one question. What are the other monk guilds going to use? Old masters from Japan, China, and Okinawa use many different types of weapons.

I was also thinking about what the other organization weapons should be. Celest should use Staffs, Glomdoring should use Sais, and Magnagora should use Kamas, however, that's just my opinion. Whatever you Admin guys use for the new Monk weapons I'm sure will be really cool.

Mag better get Sai.

Edit: Whoops, I meant I think Mag should get the sai more than Glom, I think it follows Mag more.

Assuming the weapons will follow the names (With the exception of Shofa, but that was a necessity) then, correct me if I'm wrong, but there seems to be a correlation between Bokendo and Bokken (Wooden swords), Ninjaka and Ninjaken (a bit like short katanas) and Nekotai and Neko-te (Claws, think Wolverine).

Unless they all end up being Fae words for completely unrelated weapons. I'm still hanging onto the hope of getting kusari-gamas for Glooms.

Neko-te fit Glom well enough, though. Bleeding's a major theme among Harbingers, and SDs get those cute little redcaps.

I'm holding out for bagh nakh knives.

I live in hope.
Talnar2007-07-16 23:47:57
I hope Celest doesn't use Boken. Those're training swords!
Shamarah2007-07-16 23:55:02
Celest will be using staves. Estarra's started asking us for skill ideas in the monk subforum.

The name "Bokendai" seems to come mostly from the bo staff.
