Learning to throw knives, and I'm amazingly addicted to it. This :censor: is awesome.

May I learn from you?
Classes start tomorrow! First semester of my last year in college *makes "last year, last year" my mantra*
I just found out there's an official competition during the ToyCon 2011 to be held this weekend (June 18-19, 2011). Well, in retrospect, there have been competitions every ToyCon afaik. I never attended a con before so I weren't sure. Yeah..and unless there's a separate registration fee for joining the competition, my folks want me to hang up the contest bar for display. xD I've just started joining Anime/Comic/Game events and I'm throwing myself into the CosPlay competition pit. xD

Oh man.. so much fun. I try not to creep people out with my collection of throwing knives and hatchets when they visit. Now if I could only do that while on a jet ski... People shoot guns on snow skis and call it a sport, so why not?

drop wood, g knife, wield knife, throw knife at wood, repeat.
Don't snap your wrist, always throw it the same way and adjust your distance until you figure out the rotation needed to stick them. It's not that difficult, just takes some time and each throwing object is different.

Nicely weighted knives are the key, really. I was taught that it was a flick of the wrist.
Ixion2011-06-13 11:35:16
You can do it both ways (snap wrist or not) as long as you do it identically each time. Snapping your wrist gives you more chance to mess up rotation.

There's also the question of how you grip the knife and in what way you throw it. Some hold it by the tip and spin it edge-on to the target. I learned with the edge perpendicular to the target, all point when you stick it. Got a nice big chunk of magnolia coming soon to set up a target again. I plan to teach myself the no rotation throwing once I've got it setup.

I prefer bows.
Seraku2011-06-13 23:59:25
Throwing knives are indeed fun, I got to try it once and for some reason throwing it by the tip (opposite of what the instructor taught) worked fine for me. Also managed to get the knife to stick almost flat against the wood somehow.
Casilu2011-06-14 00:03:33
I just use a gun. So much easier.

Bows are also fun, as are guns, but they're different sensations. Guns especially, as they don't have the same *thunk* experience to them.

Agreed. My dad has a 30 yard archery lane setup which can be a lot of fun. And while shooting guns can be enjoyable, I don't own a gun of my own at the moment, whereas I do own a compound bow, recurve bow (50lb draw), and an assortment of throwing knives. Also, I can't just go out in the back yard and blast a few rounds, whereas it's not illegal to throw knives there. =)

Why do you all have pretty stuff to play with?
