A recent reread of Homestuck caused me to notice that
Eridan is basically there to act as a shallow foil to Vriska, thereby giving her cruel actions contrasting depth. Vriska blinds Terezi, Eridan blinds Sollux; Vriska murders Tavros, unable to deal with her blackrom feelings, Eridan murders Feferi, unable to deal with his redrom ones; and of course they are both dealt with by undead, angry versions of former victims, though Vriska manages to survive robo-Aradia while Eridan is gloriously chainsaw'd by a po'd Kanpire. But Vriska's actions have reasons (occasionally tenuous ones, granted) and she ultimately acknowledges her failings and attempts character growth. Eridan throws a hissy fit and gets bifurcated.
I've been a lot less enamoured of the fishy little fella since I noticed. But he still has the best songs! (and also i wish i was a woman so i could wine & dine hh)
